Graze.com: Healthy Snacks delivered to your door

DSCN4168

Here's something new for snackers. Graze is a "snack subscription" service. I was able to try Graze at zero cost, with no commitment (And you can too!). The program allows you to pretty much "Nay" or "Yay" items, but you can't select what snacks you want in your box, otherwise "build-your-box". I like the surprise-me idea and because they sort of catalog your tastes before, I gave it a go!

DSCN4167

I was told my box would arrive the first week of February and it arrived the last week of January, so that was a pleasant surprise. My snack box was shipped via USPS and you get four treats, each individually sealed. Codes are also included to share with friends and work sort of like a referral program. Included is also a Nutrition Facts card, which lets you know the caloric count, sugars, ect.. However if you want a full list of ingredients, it states to check on-line....so very easy with even an exact unique link listed on there that coincides with the item.

DSCN4169

DSCN4176

My first item to try was the Herby Bread Basket. My husband and I tried the garlic crostini, a mini basil breadstick, and a oregano rice cracker. I tried the cracker first and the cluster seems to be made from brown rice going by the taste but has a very sugary flavor that tends to not bump nicely with the herb notes. I did not detect oregano and more of what you get when you use parsley flakes, but that can be from flavors combining in the packet. My Husband just stated he really does not like how those taste. The sugary notes were overwhelming and hard to look past them and maybe would fit better with an Asian mix, versus a mix that seems more Italian-like going by the flavors. The garlic crostini is just like a crouton would taste and not overly garlic. Think of the square croutons that are meant to be used for making stuffing but in a pinch you see them used on salads. Now, the mini basil breadsticks were pleasant but salty. I even rinsed my mouth thinking the sugary notes from the rice cracker were influencing my taste buds but unfortunately it was not. 1 out of 3 items in this snack were okay-ish,so I gave this one a "Nay"

DSCN4170

The next day we tried the HoneyComb Flapjack, made of rolled oats and drizzled with chocolate. The item is soft in texture and smells a little like a oatmeal cookie does minus the raisins. Took a bite and the first thing that came to mind, a no-bake cookie. You do not taste the chocolate and I give you that the square does not have a processed flavor at all but it was lacking in flavor period. The square smelled better than it tasted. My Husband bailed on taking a second bite because the grainy texture was just not his thing. I dumped the rest into my yogurt cup and it sort of got lost in there. This is when I noticed the grains I eat from my granola mix had more flavor than the Flapjack. We gave this a "Nay".

DSCN4171

I wanted to end on a good note so I opened the Trail Mix. My mix had redskin peanuts, roasted hazelnuts, jumbo raisins, and cranberries. It's so my kind of thing that this mix was created for me. I peel open the container and noticed it does not smell like what I am seeing. Sort of musty. I taste a peanut and my Husband takes a very non-jumbo sized raisin and walks off. My peanut was soft in texture and tasted rancid so I did not finish it. I then hear from the other room in the house, "don't taste the raisin, I had to spit it out". Ummmm....okay, so I taste a hazelnut and roasted it is not and suffers from that same softness and weird off taste the peanut does. I gave up and disposed of this mix. The nuts are soft like if they had been in a cooler and then sweated a bit when they were warmed (maybe while in transit). Nonetheless, they were bad! Nay again!

DSCN4173

The Booster Seeds I would love to say are my next choice by I am starting to grow shy here. The Booster mix has sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and golden flax seeds. I eat flax seeds and pumpkin seeds on a routine basis, so this is again familiar territory. I peel open the container........these smell and taste fine!!! Yay!! the seeds have crunch and no musty smell. They are plain with no salt and sugar and play well with anything or you can enjoy them as-is. We have a winner and the quality is decent.

So, 4 snack boxes in total and 1 out 4 was a winner. These 4-box units usually cost $6.00, plus that includes shipping. I will say that $6 with shipping would make me buy at least once a month but when only 1 snack item was a hit and it was the plainer of the bunch, that would be one over priced 1.2 ounces sized snack. I really wanted to be a Graze fan because the idea of trying new snacks and with a healthy twist, plus delivered to your door is something I desire......sort of dreamy for me who likes this kind of "stuff". The freedom to move deliveries around to fit your needs or even budget makes this a friendly company, which is rare today. The site is welcoming and easy to see what they offer. I just would not want to cringe at opening a packet and being welcomed by rancid nuts that made the dried fruit taste like something that you want to only taste once and never repeat. I worry about when Summer hits and if the quality will "boing" all over the place but have to share for my first-time try, Graze left me wanting to graze from my pantry versus from my mailbox. I may try again in the future because I would love to support a company with good intentions that maybe were caught on a bad day!

Bob's Red Mill: Gluten Free Zucchini Fries made with Rice Flour and Pecorino Romano & Parmesan Cheese

DSCN4193

With the Big Game taking place this weekend, I wanted to try making a recipe that was not just healthier, but tasting delicious was a must. I started from scratch and this is my first time working with Rice Flour. My oven also decided to die on Wednesday (he needs a new igniter) and of course the part is on back-order and it won't be fixed until the middle of next week, so this girl needs to find a way to still celebrate this weekend!

I started by cutting raw zucchini into sticks to resemble fries. Since I was experimenting, I used half of a zucchini because this was a large sized one to begin with. I poured buttermilk and allowed the vegetable to soak for about 30 minutes. I then mixed the ingredients for the batter.

DSCN4181

Soak 1/2 to 1 Zucchini in buttermilk for about 20 to 30 minutes. I used about 1/2 a cup of buttermilk.

Coating/Batter:
1/4 cup of Bob's Red Mill Rice Flour
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoon of Pecorino Romano & Parmesan cheese blend (you may use any grated hard cheese)
Smoked Salt (to taste)
Pepper Medley (to taste)
Dash of Parsley Flakes
Dash of Cayenne Pepper

You simply take the above ingredients and mix until incorporated.

DSCN4184

I then took the french fry style zucchini sticks and simply coated them until they were nicely covered.

DSCN4185 DSCN4187 DSCN4188

While I coated the rest of the zucchini, I started to warm the oil (I used Peanut oil but you can use any oil that suits you best). Once the oil reached a 375 degree temperature, I began to fry. You will notice that the amount of oil needed is not much and these begin to brown almost instantly.

DSCN4190 DSCN4191

Like, within 30 seconds you will notice color change so be ready to flip. The rice flour cooks up to a nice golden brown and because the cooking time is quick, this not only a easy recipe to make but the vegetable does not get soggy or mushy in texture. You get crisp and light fries you can enjoy. You may serve with ranch or even a light marinara, or just as is with a dash of flake salt and black pepper.

DSCN4192

Try the above with onion petals and you can mix it up :) For a fun way to serve, I used a sheet of parchment paper and made a cone. Cut the top with one of those decorative scissors that leave a pretty edge (or just swag up and down when cutting). I then stapled the end because tape does not stick to parchment paper. Cheap and an easy was to give them that classic "Pomme Frites"!

DSCN4194

Enjoy your weekend!

California Delicious: Not your Ordinary Gift Box and Basket Company

A gift basket is always welcomed in our home and not only do I enjoy the variety but I love trying new items. As of late with the holidays not too far away from us, I noticed that many baskets cost a pretty good penny but the thrill of the "good stuff" is not present. It's almost the place where snack food goes to get stale! Not great when you bite into something and wonder if you would have liked it if it were fresher.

DSCN4096

In comes California Delicious with not your ordinary baskets. They offer everything from baskets and gift boxes with fresh fruit, chocolates, stuffed animals, wine, beer, and you name the occasion......they have it covered. The one thing I love is that if you live within the state, shipping is a whopping $0.00. Very nice. So the price point you see is what it is with no hidden charges. If you live out of state, they offer a reasonable rate starting at $9.00 (standard ground) for most of their selections. Very fair pricing and if you sign-up for their mailing list, you get 15% off promotion. Navigate the site and a $10.00 off a $75.00 purchase coupon pops-up as so does a $5 off of $50.00! I believe in getting the most out of your dollar and right now, California Delicious has a heck of a perk! Be part of the "Give a Gift, Get a Gift" program. Just purchase a basket and each purchase gets you a $50.00 gift card* to www.NakedWines.com. The only small catch is you can only use one gift card yourself but you will get one with every item you buy. Great way to pass the perk forward and share with others. Make your basket purchase twice as nice!

DSCN4098

I ordered the Starbuck's Coffee gourmet box. It's item #9966 and it's the first gift basket I have been 100% content with from top to bottom. I always have items in baskets and boxes that are just not for me or I plainly do not enjoy.....not this one! The Starbuck's Coffee Mornings Gift box has a reasonable price point of $59.99 and it even has a stainless steel travel tumbler that can be used again and again. I always like gifting items of this kind that not only yield food for my family and friends to enjoy, but you want a reusable gift so there is something always left to enjoy again and again. Every item in the box is Starbuck's branded.....no fillers to make this box seem more than it is. See for yourself and California Delicious discloses all contents, no need to over examine a picture to see what really comes in the basket ("Is that a candy I see back there?" kind of thing). I like that California Delicious is open and upfront because its just so tacky to inquire when you send someone a gift basket or box and hope they got everything as pictured. The last thing you want to ask is for a run-down! This is what my beautiful box came with http://www.californiadelicious.com/starbucks-coffee-mornings-gift-box.html:

  • Starbucks Pike's Place Blend Coffee

  • Starbucks Sumatra Blend Coffee

  • Starbucks Blonde Roast Coffee

  • Starbucks CafĂ© Estima Coffee

  • Starbucks Hot/Cold Travel Mug

  • VIA Ready brew Coffee

  • 3 - Spiced Biscotti

  • 1 - Vanilla Biscotti

Other things I want to share is that I have never received a Biscotti cookie in "as-pictured" shape. They are usually baggies holding something what was once a cookie but is not a dry cracked baggy of dust. My chocolate swirl was even intact and every cookie was whole. I got to break it myself and enjoy it.....fresh and "biteable" with no regret or staleness! Ever item has an expiration date and just the bagged coffees alone the date was 6 to 7 months from when I received it. The VIA coffee is an entire box with 8 servings and that doesn't expire until September. You can actually take your time enjoying your treats. The bags included have a 10 to 12 cup serving each so you get plenty of sevings for a very reasonable price. You add that you get a $50.00 gift card to NakedWines.com and it's a perk that makes buying from California Delicious a must! Try them today and especially with Valentine's Day just around the corner. California Delicious is not your everyday basket and gift box company, they deliver not only beautiful looking treats but it's filled with items you will actually enjoy and love!

Tropical Tradition's: Virgin Coconut Oil, Gold Label USDA Organic

DSCN4090

I have enjoyed coconut as a child from the fruit to the water, and became more curious about the oil when I purchased a product (spread) that contained Coconut oil and real Butter. I thought I would get a strong flavor that went with the fruit and while this is a plus for me, it is not for my anti-coconut husband, but he enjoyed the product after trying it. I started seeing the oil pop up in markets like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and even your standard everyday superstores but the jars were not all created equal. So much separation and so many color changes in brands that I did not know where to start when it came to making an actual purchase. Then I started investigating what makes one better than the other, because nowadays making a bad buy not only fills you with regret, but who needs a ding in the pocket book?

DSCN4081

The things I learned are that like everything else, the cost of the product does not equate quality. You want an oil that is derived from a good, trusted source and a product that has not been exposed to light or variances in temperature. coconut oil does not go rancid as quickly as other oils and while it's more forgiving in that department, you still don't want an abused jar that could have lasted longer if the manufacturer had cared. I have used coconut oil for beauty purposes and found it wonderful for the skin above my eyes that is more delicate. After going through an allergic reaction from an eye primer, coconut oil mixed with vitamin E oil is what helped my skin come back to normal, so I am a believer of it can do for the skin's health and it's restoring powers!

DSCN4085

Now, you all know I love baking, but also cooking savory foods so with this product test, I just jumped in and went with what I had in hand. I marinated two large chicken breasts (cut into strips) over night with cayenne pepper, smoked sea salt, parsley, mustard powder, a dash of smoked paprika, oregano, three pepper blend from the mill and then added one cup of buttermilk, plus one bay leaf. You can use coconut milk in place of the buttermilk if you want a more "tropical" flavor. This is my recipe for fried chicken but I was making both fried and roasted this time. After everything marinated, you will notice that the buttermilk/coconut milk will be well absorbed by the meat and this also aids with tenderizing. I then made 2 batches, one coated with (seasoned) flour for the deep fried portion and the other went in the oven as-is (on parchment paper) and I cooked it for 15 minutes at 400 degrees. These are chicken strips and cook rather easy but I was not done with the roasted chicken yet!

DSCN4086

(Above) Just out from the oven and not browned with Tropical Tradition's Virgin Coconut Oil

I then placed the strips in a pan with the Tropical Virgin coconut oil. I used just about 1/2 tablespoon and the oil melts clear and beautifully. Coconut oil has a smoke point of 350 degrees so I kept this in mind when browning. You will notice in the pan that because the chicken went in the oven with no oils/fats, it did not brown nicely but this is when the magic happens. I sauteed the chicken and it browns quickly and nicely. The top layer was so crisp that you would swear I coated it with some kind of batter. The meat remains juicy and tender, plus I noticed this oil was not quickly absorbed like other oils I have used. After I was done, I had at least 1/4 of it left in the pan and I like when fats don't oil log foods.

DSCN4087

(Above) Browned and resting after cooking with Tropical Tradition's Virgin Coconut Oil

I allowed the chicken to rest and then sliced it to serve over a salad. My salad contained 5 different lettuces, plus some cabbage and kale. I boiled a small egg and also added a whole small avocado. Sprinkled some poppy seeds, smoked paprika on the eggs and pepper medley over the entire salad. I placed the chicken on top and had a meal that was not only filling but delicious and nutritious. My husband had a bite of the chicken and he could pick up a hint of the sweetness but not the coconut notes he dislikes. Let's say you smell the coconut fruit in the pan while you cook but you do not taste it on the meat. I like my greens how they taste so I opted for a dressing I make that is just a plain vinaigrette (smoked sea salt, pepper medley, red wine vinegar and any oil of your choice). I will definitely be purchasing my coconut oil from a trusted source like Tropical Traditions because it is the best I have ever had!

DSCN4092

You smell the coconut's sweetness but even when you taste it from the jar, the product has more of a nutty like flavor versus what you expect taste wise from the coconut's fruit. I also like how clean and non-oily it tastes. You do not get that unwanted oily film feeling that covers your mouth like with other oils. Try it today and from Tropical Tradition's because they have a 100% Money Back Guarantee on 16 oz. trial size!

DSCN4079

Guarantee as stated from their site:

Tria: Hair Removal Laser 4X

I usually start reviews by breaking down a product and I will be doing this but there is a new twist to this one, I will be posting my results first because when I was searching on-line about Tria, many reviewers detailed features and did not open up if this was a buy. Yes, the product has a heftier price tag (at $449) than most of the beauty items I purchase, however I measure a product's worth by it's performance and can say that Tria is so worth it!

DSCN4052

I started my Tria treatments a little after Thanksgiving because it was my goal to enter 2014......well, less hairy. I wanted to simplify my beauty regimen and there were areas I wanted to target because in my mind it would make me happier not worrying about grooming (plucking, shaving, ect.) in those areas. I received the parcel and unfortunately my first Tria laser acted goofy at no fault of the company. The first box delivered was involved in a train derailment in Arizona and I am unsure if the box was delayed because it was in the train that derailed (hit an overpass) or delayed because the train that had the parcel could not pass, nonetheless the laser was exchanged without me missing a treatment. I went from owning a Graphite colored one to then Lilac, but I just care about results!

FAST Results:
Let me begin by saying that I read reviews and noticed the users of the Tria laser that reported success, used the laser once a week even though the product states you can start using it in 2 week intervals. The Tria 4X has five intensity levels and I started on 2, then worked to level 3 while doing the same area, and then to to level 4. Level 4 was my comfort level in week #1 and by week #2, I just used the maximum level 5. People describe the "pain" as a rubber-band snapping, however I disagree. You get certain areas where you will feel discomfort and this is mostly because the laser will get hot as you go. Areas you have nerves a little closer to the surface will feel a pinch and sometimes like you got flicked, but nothing that can make you afraid from proceeding. I find stopping and letting the laser tip cool (30 seconds to 1 minute) helps when you move from one treatment spot to the other and feel heat (discomfort) before pushing the button.

Treated Area Details:
I started on facial and then moved to the bikini area. I am part Spanish and that makes me get hairs on my chin, which I pluck but because I have fair skin, I sometimes was left with a black dot if the hair did not fully come out. I hate that! I used concealer but also disliked using it for black dots. I started treating and by week #4, I was 50% diminished. By week #6 and #7, I was 90% hair free. I may have a straggler here and there but still mostly hairless. Like, none need to be plucked, and no black dots where a hair was or is coming. My skin looks like it never even had hair (no enlarged pores). I even did the "sideburn" area, & the middle of my eyebrows and because hair was finer there, that area was hairless within 4 weeks alone. I may add I use my concealer now ZERO times and I am keeping it in case I get a bad pimple or something. Now, the bikini area is where I do feel discomfort and some pain in certain areas and can only treat so low. I noticed by week #4 my bikini area's hair was growing at a snail's pace and there was less to shave every week. I want to treat lower but I may be picking up their "numbing cream" to reduce the uncomfortable factor because I have to stop and go as I treat and want quicker results. I could stay between level 3 and 4 and continue treating but I have to stop and take a break when I do.

Lasting Results:
When you see results it's hard to stop! It seems too good to be true or like the nightmare I feared, the hairs will come back and with attitude. It's hard to understand "permanent results" until you see and feel the experience. I don't have to pick up my tweezers other than pluck around my eyebrows and I take maybe 8 minutes and then I'm done. I own 5 sets of tweezers and now feel silly I purchased them because I don't need them. I just put on make-up and go and it's hard to get used to it as before I had to pluck. I tried using Nair and Olay creams but they mostly just made my skin red and irritated while not removing all the hair. Plus, the results didn't last. I expect 100% removal if a product states so and I am getting there with Tria.

DSCN4050

My only Con:
My only negative is something that would not even stop me from purchasing the unit, it's the size of the unit itself and the circumference of the area it treats at a time. The laser has a large head and I have a small hand so at times I get a little cramp from holding it....no biggie. Now, the area it can treat is great for doing small areas like the face, in between eyebrows, and even above the lip and it's almost perfect for that. Having to do the legs and larger areas and you will be wishing the tip was larger but then again if it was you could not do the finer details. So it sits somewhere near the middle, which mostly works for me.

DSCN4051

Tria 4X needs zero refills or lamps, no silly stuff to replace so you spend once and that is all. With a 90-day Money Back Guarantee, the product has a company that does stand by it. It's FDA-cleared, so you can feel safe by using the unit and I have not experienced any skin damage, hyperpigmentation or even redness that lasts longer than 20 minutes. I have sensitive skin and I'm very fair so I was concerned with anything like marks or pigment changes but I have only experienced permanent hair removal. I explored many brands and knowing that I would need refills at close to $50 a pop made me shy in wanting to spend and spend. I looked at Spas, Groupon Deals, you name it and again you do not get a guarantee and there is that unknown of what the final cost will be. With Tria you know $449 is the price point and done. I will be looking at their Smoothstart Calming Gel and see if that helps in the areas I tend to be a little sensitive and see if it helps makes it more comfortable.

Battery Life and Life of the Unit Inquiry:
I did inquire about battery life and use and this is the direct reply I received from Tria via e-mail-

The TRIA Laser is designed to work for several years, until the lithium battery no longer holds a charge. The battery will last for more than 400 charging cycles—in other words, you can recharge it 400 times. Of course the TRIA Laser is only for hair removal, so it’s effective only if there is still hair to be removed.

I went for the Sausage Rigatoni and I can say Ralph's was fully stocked with all the selections available and a healthy quantity.

Directions can't get simpler and faster with these one-skillet meals. You open the bag, add it to your pan and cook. No butter or oils need to be added!  I worry with pasta based frozen dishes because many tend to come out with a less desired texture but after the meal was cooked, the pasta was al-dente and had a pleasing texture. You get a good portion of sausage and these meals serve 2 to 3 people. I can say that we were full after splitting the meal in half and I actually did not finish my entire serving. I did add fresh (roma) tomatoes 5 minutes before the meal was ready, along with some fresh parsley. After the entree was finished, I added a topping of fresh basil and parmesan reggiano before serving. I was satisfied with the meal and so was my Husband. For those moments when time is not on your side, you can use a little help from Ralph's Skillet Meals and I like that you can personalize the meal by adding ingredients.

BzzAgent: Kroger/ Ralph's Meals Fresh House Salad with Bacon Kit

Located with the bagged salads at your local Ralph's, you will find a variety available from Caesar's Salad both "lite' and original but I went for the one with Bacon. The salad kit comes with everything you need except a fork! You get a generous ranch dressing packet, a shredded cheddar cheese packet and bacon. They even included little croutons to compliment the side or you can make this a meal.

Overall Taste and Texture:
I was at the store when the salads were being stocked and all that was available was the Caesar Lite version and the House Salad with Bacon. Even though a brand-new box with the salad kits were being stocked, you could see that the kits experienced some temperature fluctuations because the lettuce and greens were sweaty and even limp. I picked the best bag I could find to go with my dinner. The employee was very nice and even went to check for "better bags" and other kits but this was all that was available.

Upon opening the salad kit at home, I noticed my fears were confirmed because the lettuce had an off smell so I washed it even though the bag stated triple washed on it. Once washed, the greens came back to life in the cold water and I then used a salad spinner to make sure everything was dry enough for assembly. A few leaves did have to go in the trash because they just had gone bad. Not exactly open, mix and serve but worth the process to make sure I got the crispest and cleanest lettuce. The cheese had a little too much corn/potato starch, which is used to keep the shreds separate so I skipped on adding it and left it for Hubby's baked potato. The bacon was not crisp but I placed it in a cup and gave it a 10 second zap in the microwave, that fixed that right up and it smelled delicious. The dressing is a little on the sweet side so I went light with it and also added sliced cucumbers and tomatoes to my salad.

The overall taste and serving portion is great if you are in a hurry but I would not consider this a prime quality product. I think it' may be my not so local Ralph's store that may not be keeping things as they should because the salad's greens could have been much better. I get better quality from a cheaper head of lettuce and the price tag does not justify the not convenient process I got out of this bag. In theory, the product should have been easier and better than the final results. I can say the croutons were crisp and more flavorful in taste than the dressing. Again when it comes to bread, Ralph's does very well!

BzzAgent: Kroger/ Ralph's Classic Garlic Bread

DSCN3825

Located in the Fresh Bakery section of your local Ralph's grocery store, you will find a french style loaf that is packaged in a foil covered bag. The loaf is large enough for a family to enjoy with two meals! Very easy to warm up in your oven and it's ready to go with no preparation needed. Neat.

Overall Taste and Texture:
I liked the bread itself as it had a wonderful crust and was light and fluffy towards the center. The spread is suppose to resemble a garlic one, however I did not smell much garlic when I checked out the loaf before baking. I smelled oils and what you would describe a very light garlic-ey scent that seemed more like what you find in seasonings (powdered). After heating, I sliced the bread and again did not detect a rich smell that makes you almost drool when you have garlic bread in front of you. I usually sneak a bite in before serving but the spread was so fluorescent yellow in coloring, that it did not pique my appetite. When I lifted the top portion from the bottom, I noticed the "butter" was more oil than anything.....maybe it's a margarine? I felt the spread sort of was a negative compared to how the bread itself is. I would definitely purchase a loaf of bread to go with a meal but I am sticking to plain on this one!

Klout Perk: Braun Forehead Thermometer Model FHT 1000

IMAG0344

My newest Klout perk was a wonderful surprise when it arrived on New Year's Eve. It is the Braun Thermometer, Model FHT 1000. No longer do you have to stick a thermometer in your mouth or even your ear to check your temperature. This is a forehead thermometer that has a large color-coded screen with instant fever detection. The new Braun Forehead thermometer uses the skin's surface over the temporal artery, which is connected to the heart. You get an accurate temperature and there is no probe covers needed. The thermometer comes with a protective cap and the 2 AAA batteries it takes, so you are set right out of the box. I tried it and just in seconds had an accurate read out. The Braun FHT 1000 is for everyone in the family from infants to adults!
