Neosan Colorblock Bikini

Summer is almost here, and In Southern California, we're gearing up for pool and beach weather. Part of getting ready fro the coming swim season is updating my bathing suits. From time to time, I like to change things up a bit, and NEOSAN was more than happy to oblige me with a sample of their wares to wear.
DSC_1315
And while I like a few things about the suit, there are a few I didn't like as much. Right from jump, the suit should have been double lined, because the white part, when wet, is almost completely transparent. No bueno for the beach, and a little risque even for the pool at home. Now, the padding in the top would cover any....shall we say, bits, that might show, but they are awkwardly shaped and make for a "lumpy" looking top. So it's a real catch-22. The material is stretchy and doesn't bind, and the first wear and wash I didn't see any real color loss or shrinkage. Which is good because this suit is pretty low-rise in the front as is. I love the ties on the side for the bottom and on the top, which means I can semi-customize my fit. I ordered medium, and it fit like a medium, which is a nice thing when sizes on Amazon tend to run all over the place. I'm not as much of a fan of the "scrunch" back bottom. It makes the waistband dip and show some crack, which isn't a good look on plumbers and isn't on me either, plus it's uncomfortable. That's a trend I'd like to see go bye-bye. But the coverage on the back is moderate and other than the "scrunch", I like it.

I wanted to wear the suit more, but the transparency of the wite portions is a major issue. I'm not a prude at all, but I definitely don't want my cash and prizes out there for the world to see every time my bikini gets wet. So as much as I want to give this a 5-star rating, I have to say it's more of a three because, really, a see-through bikini might be a hit with Hubby but isn't my cup of tea. This issue might be limited to this style/color, but I would venture a guess that other, darker colors wouldn't have this issue, and the cut and feel of the bikini I received is on par with Victoria's Secret, at a fraction of the cost.

Q's Inn Stainless Steel Accented Salt and Pepper Grinders

I learned about the amazing flavor differences from fresh ground pepper a long, long time ago, and the various flavor intricacies of fresh ground artisinal salts not too long after. Since then, I haven't used pre-ground pepper or granular salt since. One of the inevitabilities of grinders are that they wear out, so when I got a chance to try a new set from Q's Inn, I was incredibly thankful.

I'm glad I got to try them, because they are some of the smoothest grinding salt and pepper dispensers I've ever used. To start, the base, made of crystal-clear glass instead of the industry standard plastic, is a welcome change and makes keeping an eye on the amount left a breeze, unlike my old set which were wood and made knowing how much was left a guessing game. Glass is easy to clean, both inside and out. The bases hold twice as much as my old grinders, and that's a huge benefit, because one of the things that really gets under my skin is an empty grinder while I'm cooking. The grinding top has a brushed stainless steel, with a snap on top, and adjustable ceramic burr with an infinitely adjustable setting for fine or extra chunky grinds. And like I said, the grinding action started smooth and stayed that way over a few weeks of use. Usually, with the disposable grinders I bought from Trader Joe's would gunk up and bind after a couple weeks. No such issue with the Q's Inn set.

This Q's Inn set of grinders is a little pricier than the usual sets at $19.99, but the quality of materials really sets this pair of grinders apart. The ceramic burrs should last a very, very long time. The stainless steel tops are smooth and look stunning. The glass bases are large, hold a good amount of pepper or salt, and make for an easy, sure grip for grinding. Top top it off, there's a LIFETIME 100% Satisfaction guarantee, and that's almost worth the price for peace of mind alone! This might be the last grinder set you need to buy! There's a lot to like and nothing I don't about this Q's Inn set and recommend them highly.

Ozeri's Green Earth Frying Pan 3-Piece Set

Ozeri
I always have my cookware radar tuned for a decent set of non-stick pans because let's face it, they just don't last anymore and eating the non-stick coating is bad for your health. And I don't care what anyone says, there's always a place in my kitchen for a good non-stick pan because there are times you just want the ease, simplicity and convenience of warm, cook, wash and go. I was so looking forward to Ozeri's Green Earth frying pan set, especially since I recently tested and loved their other Green Earth pan so much.
DSC_1079
But while there are definitely some areas where this set will shine, it fell pretty short of the mark I set for a must-buy pan set. For starters, the Greblon ceramic non-stick coating is slick and probably the most non-stick of any pan I've had, ever. But that is a double edged sword, in that while nothing stuck at all ever, it also would not brown or even remotely sear anything to save it's life. And I know what you're saying, you don't buy non-stick to sear anything, but every non-stick pan I've had since the mid-90's has allowed me to get a decent bit of browning on the meats I cooked in them, even the prior Ozeri Green Earth ceramic non-stick pan, but not any pan in this set. Even the Asian-inspired Fried Rice from Trader Joe's would get a crispy crust on the bottom, but not in these pans. If I had to hazard a guess, the waffle-like texture on the pan's surface might create air pockets while cooking that does enhance the non stick properties but also won't allow any decent browning. So, things like scrambled eggs and pancakes might be dynamite in this pan, but browning meats will just not happen. The pan washed up like a dream and the heat-resistant silicone handles on these pans are oven safe to 350 degrees and make handling even the hottest pan no problem. The slippery non-stick coating is 100% PTFE, PFOA and APEO free, which means no heavy metals or chemicals were used to manufacture it, which means it's a healthier alternative to older generations of non-stick pans. The pan is light thanks to cast aluminum construction, and while it heats quickly and evenly, the heat does quickly dissipate. You get a 12", 10", and 8" size pan in this set,so there's a size there to accommodate any size household.

There are some real nice features to these pans and I can totally see them being indispensable for certain cooking styles and certain kitchens, but unfortunately mine just isn't one of them. It's pretty rare when an Ozeri product is a miss like this for me, but I'll grade them on the curve and say that while it doesn't work for me, it might work better for others, and as always, you just can't beat Ozeri's dedication to customer service. They stand behind their products 100% and customer satisfaction is their number 1 priority, so I encourage you to give these pans a try and see if they work for you!Let's not forget the included "value added" green felt pan cozies, which make storage simple and easy allowing you to "nest" you pans without any feat of damaging the ceramic non-stick surface!

OxyLED Dimmable LED Copper Wire String Lights

LED lighting has come a long way, and one of my favorite companies that's making the latest and greatest is OxyLED. They always find a way to innovate, taking a product we all thought we knew and changing things up just enough to make the common product shiny and new. The latest is their LED string lights. I've reviewed a few before, and a one was, up until now, my favorite. Let me share why this new offering from OxyLED supplanted them so handily.
DSC_1135
To start, we've all been there. The best laid out plans to decorate and light a fixture in the house come undone because try as you might, you'll see the wire. OxyLED realized this and decided if you're going to see it anyway, you might as well make it sparkle with gorgeous, bright shiny copper. And I'm loving it. Gone also are the harsh, bright blue-white lights of LED's from the past and in their place are soft, warm white lights (2700-2900K warm white range) that aren't hard on your eyes int he least. But what took it up to 11 for me was the remote control. Not just a simple "on" or "off", but you can dim them, and they can flash, strobe and fade too. That's just too cool. Not just for holidays or parties, but I can use these lights for my year round decorating, I can use them for mood light, I can even leave them up for parties and social gatherings. There's nothing they're not good for, and at 120 lights on a 40 foot string, the possibilities are endless! And with over 12" from the first light to the control box, and almost 60" from the box to the plug, your lights will have plenty of length to hide the cord and keep it hidden. I did notice that at a certain distance (about 20 feet and through a wall) the remote didn't always get the signal through. Careful placement of the antennae should remedy that, however.
DSC_1136
All this and you get OxyLED's stellar service and support, for the life of the product. 10 brightness levels, 3 modes, a remote control, a beautiful light set with an equally beautiful wire, perfect lighting colors and lifetime support? And for only $14.99? That's a steal. I'm planning on picking up a few sets, because they have so many uses, I'm making plans right now to light a few projects. I love these lights, and I think you will too.

Last Man Survival Gear's LED "Opti-Flood" Flashlight Set

22394_920750904647761_8168510747349018002_n
So, It's been a while since I last reviewed a LED flashlight, mostly because after the OxyLED MD50 I reviewed here set the bar pretty high for overall quality and value, I was pretty well set. But the offer from Last Man Survival Gear was one I couldn't refuse, and seemed tailor-made for mine and Hubby's needs. And while there are some shortcomings, I can say with confidence that this set seems to be a decent value for the money!
DSC_1132
Let's just get this out of the way right here, though: Last Man brazenly claims their Opti-Flood lamp puts out 1200 lumens. Unless they somehow hooked it up to a car battery, I don't see how it's possible, because the included 18650 lithium ion cell ran the lamp  just a shade brighter than the OxyLED M50 that claimed 500 lumens, and just slightly dimmer than Hubby's Coast HP7 rated for 360 lumens. So, as long as you understand and accept that this Opti-Flood lamp will run at just under 360 lumens, you'll be okay. The run time on a single charge is decent, and takes some time to notice any real dimming of the output. The color of the light is not the harsh, blue/purple color of the cheaper CREE knockoff LED's, and is almost going into the "soft white" color range, even more so than the MD50. The focus is smooth and quick, but still goes into the square shape of the diode like so many of the budget lamps out there. Not a dealbreaker by any means. The throw is pretty good, with very minimal haloing or spill from the reflector. The Last Man Opti-Flood does tend to get a little warm fairly quickly, so I wouldn't run it for very long periods of time. It will tail-stand easily, but lacks any deep knurling that would make the surface super grippy, and I would have liked something to keep the lamp from rolling when placed on it's side, because it rolls quickly and easily. Lastly, there's just off and on with the tail cap clicker, and while some might see that as a negative, I prefer it to the 3, 4, or 5 function lamps that require you to cycle through each setting every time.
DSC_1134
As for the value, Last Man Survival Gear included a bonus lamp, the LT30, which is small and light, suitable for a purse, pocket, or key ring, and has a similar output to a single AA flashlight, only in a much larger, heavier package. It's a nice addition, but I feel the 3.7v 18650 lithium ion battery is wasted here, not allowing either piece to shine (no pun intended) to it's full potential. The included charger is also a nice bonus, but if you're going to start investing in quality lithium ion rechargeable cells, you might want to consider a more, shall we say, robust, charger. This one is fine to get you started, and the LED indicator light on it changes from red, to yellow to green to let you know a charge cycle is complete. Last Man Survival Gear includes two of the aforementioned 3.7V 1800 mAh protected circuit batteries, as well as a AAA battery adapter, and a pretty decent hard plastic carry/storage case. Both lamps have water-resistant O-rings, which should provide some measure of light water resistance, as well as carry lanyards (but I'd expect to replace those shortly). All in all you get a fair amount of value for around the $35 they were charging when I ordered my set, although at the current $45.99, I'd say it's a bit overpriced. It's not quite the value of the venerable OxyLED MD50, but uses the same emitter setup, reflector and LED. So it's up to you if this Last Man Survival Gear's value added set is truly the LED flashlight for you.

BUREI® Watch Company's BM-7006-51E Date Chronograph Men's Watch

logo
There are a few things that I've come to expect from budget watch brands. Hollow steel links in the bands. Cheap glass for the crystal. Flimsy hardware. Poor construction and function. But when a watch comes into my home with a high-polished solid stainless steel with a push-button hidden deployant clasp, precision Japanese quartz movement, full functioning chronograph, full water resistance and a sapphire crystal for $68.99?!? Are you kidding me? Burei has got to be insane to be selling that much for that little!
DSC_1056
Any yet, they are indeed offering their quality watches at that price, and after speaking to them a few times I'm reasonably certain they're not nuts, but just nuts for quality and value. I thought the Burei BM-7006-51E Chronograph looked nice on the page when I ordered, but I wasn't prepared for how amazing it looked and fit in person. It's a little bit dressy, and also a little bit sporty, so it can fit almost any occasion and style. And while the bracelet is sold 316L stainless steel polished to a flawless mirror finish, it's not heavy or bulky, but instead sleek and understated, but also refined at the same time. The pushers for the chronograph function are smooth and actuate easily, the interior of the bezel has indices for precise countdowns, the face is an easy to read joy with minute markers and standard numeric markers at the hours, with a small date window between 4 and 5 o'clock. The case is 42mm, which is in the butter zone for Hubby (42-44mm) for size, and the 20mm band looks perfect on the wrist, not too skinny but not so large as to be obnoxious. The push-in crown is simple to use, and the scratch resistant sapphire crystal is such a nice touch and usually reserved for much more expensive timepieces, and rarely used on anything under $100. It's water resistant to 30M as well, with a screw-down case back that makes replacing the battery a breeze. There's the usual Burei attention to detail with the swirls on the clasp, the knurling on the crown, and sizing arrows on the inside of the band. There's also the usual Burei bells and whistles, with the gift box and bag, the warranty card outlining the stellar Burei 30-day, 1-Year and 2-Year warranty times, as well as a easy to read instruction manual should you have any issues. And as if there wasn't enough value added here, Burei gives you a watch sizing tool to make customizing your Burei watch a breeze, at no additional cost. The customer service is quick to respond to any and all issues (usually a 24 hour turnaround time), and they ship free next or same day with Amazon prime.

There's a lot of cheap, poorly made watches out there, and if you're like Hubby and I, we tended to sort on price and say that anything under "X" amount is not going to be made well or made to last. And Burei went and turned our world on it's head by stuffing so much quality into so sharp a package and all the while charging a pittance. At this price these quality timepieces are suitable for holiday gifts, birthday gifts, graduation gifts, or "Just Because" gifts, and they'll think you spent hundreds of dollars. I'm so thankful for the chance to try Burei watches and I'm glad to spread the word, because their name, to me, is now synonymous with Quality. You can't go wrong with Burei. And Hubby can't wait for his next one!

As an aside, Burei has been amazing to me, and I think the rep I've been working with wanted to go above and beyond, and since I was reviewing men's watches for Hubby, thought I should get a little gift as well, and included an adorable little hair clip for me. That's the kind of awesome Burei is. I'm happy o support them and recommend them to everyone I can.

Aposon's Skmei Men's "S-Shock" Outdoor Digital Quartz Watches

As much as Hubby loves his watches, he also needs a few "beaters" that he isn't worried about getting, well, beaten. The tough part about that is finding a nice cross section between affordability and quality so that it doesn't fail the first time it's used. Aposon's digital watches seem to fill that niche nicely.
DSC_1055
The fist thing you notice is they have completely ripped off Casio's venerable "G-Shock" look. I mean, if you'd told me they bought one from Casio and completely copied almost every design feature, I'd believe you. There are some tell-tale changes, in that some components are of much lower quality than the Casio they copied, but all in all you get a cheap digital watch that kind of looks nice and tells the time. Hubby wore it for yardwork two weeks straight, and while he didn't beat it against a wall, the watch still took a beating and can still tell him the time. The watch also has a stopwatch and alarm function, as well as an LED backlight for nighttime and darkness. What's also neat/odd is that you can select one of 5 different colors for that backlight, or a sixth, really weird option for a rainbow effect of it cycling through all the colors, or as hubby started calling it "Disco-o'clock". The main face of the watch tells you the day, date, and time, along with some superfluous dials that serve no purpose whatsoever. The brand name "Skmei" is at the top of the face, just below the puzzling "Japan battery". It also claims to be water resistant to 5 ATM, but warns you not to push any buttons while wet or underwater. The strap is a very malleable plastic, not a softer silicone or rubber, and the stainless steel caseback is smooth against the wrist. Short of disassembling the plastic case, I don't know how or if one could change the battery when it dies, but I suspect at the $11.69 price point, one might be better off just tossing it and buying a new one. The face from edge to edge looks to be in the 48-50mm range and the strap is also wide, probably 23-24mm. I'm guestimating here because Aposon didn't provide these measurements.

For the gym, shop, or heavy work environment where a nicer watch is sure to be destroyed, these Aposon watches are just the right intersection of affordable, reliable and disposable. It keeps fairly accurate time, but oddly I've had to adjust the day (not date) once each on separate occasions, and I would put any stock whatsoever in these watches shock resistance, despite what's on the face. But for under $12 shipped, it's great for a beater, or for kids, as long as you're aware of it's limitations.

MARSEE MSH03 Active Noise-Cancelling Bluetooth Wireless Headset

I've tested more than a few bluetooth wireless headsets, both in ear and over the ear. I have yet to find a set that has what I would consider truly premium sound, But MARSEE's MSH03 set is the closest I've found to fully premium, awesome sound. Except that there's one major, major drawback: The "Active Noise Cancelling" feature ruins the sound! Oh, the irony!

See, I've all but give up on what I would consider an affordable bluetooth headset with honest to goodness premium sound quality. And with most folks downloading low quality rips of music anyways (usually 128 kbps quality, which is usually pretty awful, but also the most ubiquitous), it became a giant game of cat and mouse tracking down high-quality downloads and then getting high quality headphones to listen to it. Everyone claimed HD sound quality to only deliver mediocre at best. But lo and behold, the set MARSEE sent me was pretty darn awesome. With controls for playback right on the earcup, soft, enveloping padding, and a firm, secure feeling on the head, these feel like actual premium headphones without being heavy, and no need to handle them gingerly for fear of all the cheap plastic cracking and breaking! They twist and form to even Hubby's big 'ol pumpkin head with ease. The bluetooth connects and pairs quickly, and no worries if there's an issue with the bluetooth, MARSEE provided a nice, braided-cloth covered cable to take your wireless headset to wired int he blink of an eye! And the sound! Oh, the sound. Crisp, sharp highs, with full, thumping lows, clear mids. These might easily be the best sounding headset I've put on in over 20 years.

And then the wheels came off my little red wagon when I engaged the active noise cancelling. And it all went to pot. The full, rich lows went away, and were replaced instead with a screechy, tinny, horribly shrill sound that absolutely ruined my experience with these headphones. I tried both wireless and wired and the results were the same: The noise cancellation feature ruins the sound and I can't for the life of me find a workaround. At $79.99, these should not have this kind of issue. Emails to the company through Amazon have yet to answered, but if not for the fact that I got this headset at no cost, with this kind of problem they'd have been returned post haste. Yes, the sound is amazing normally. The braided cloth 3.5mm audio cable and flat USB charging cords have a premium look and feel. Yes, the headphones seem to have been engineered with quality in mind and feel premium in both build and materials. The bluetooth pairs quickly and easily, but for $80, the noise cancelling feature is important and with it borking the sound so completely, I can't recommend them as highly as I'd want.

TNT Interactive Twin Turbo Vertical Cooling Stand for Playstation 4

Hubby isn't much of a "gamer", unless you count a few hours of playing Battlefield 4 every week. But even then, from time to time, the Playstation 4 can get pretty heated up, and heat + CPU's = No bueno. So a little extra help in the cooling department is always appreciated, and TNT Interactive's Vertical Cooling Stand is just what the doctor ordered!
DSC_1075
It's a simple thing most folks appreciate, a vertical stand for their shiny new PS4. Not only is it a space-saver, but the PS4's internal fans cool more effectively that way as well. But, with heavy gaming, HD video streaming, or graphics-intense games, it can still tax the internals and they can overheat if not properly cooled, and TNT Interactive's Twin Turbo Cooling Stand steps up to the plate and says "No worries, I got this". Overheating is one of the leading causes of system failures in the Playstation 4, and no one wants their nearly $400 purchase fried when a simple, affordable $17.95 base can stave off so much unhappiness. And while mine was a tight fit for Hubby's PS4, it did eventually settle in and stand comfortably. The TNTi fan base also acts as a USB hub, charging the controllers, or powering other USB peripherals. It's a modest investment that pays huge dividends over the long run, and one I'm glad I got to try.
DSC_1076
It's not all wine and roses. The fans can be slightly on the noisy side, and unlike other units I've seen, there's no way to toggle the fans manually off and on. It's plugged in and on, or it's not. Hubby doesn't have the sound up very loud so as not to scare the bejesus out of me and the dog, so we hear the drone of the fan the entire time. The other is the bright, blue LED light on the front of the base. While Hubby sits slightly off-center from the TV and PS4, I'm usually directly right in front of the light, and it's terribly, terribly bright and annoying. Minor quibbles overall, but valid ones for us. Your mileage may vary. And while there's some base units out there with a few more bells and whistles, and some might even be slightly cheaper, in the end you need to select the one that's best for your tastes, and this one suits us just fine.

Pinjian "ultimate" Resistance Band Set

I've rarely been so completely down on a product that I've returned it. Then again, I've rarely been actually, physically hurt by a product either. Pinjian (or PJian, if the label on the actual product is correct) holds the dubious distinction of being the first in both categories.
DSC_0966
This review will be short, because I don't believe in expending much effort on a product review or a company if they don't warrant it. We've used resistance bands in this house for many, many years. I even got Hubby a big, fancy set from Black Mountain products a few years back. It's still going strong, but rubber, like all things made nowadays, isn't made to last forever, so I thought a set to replace it was due. And while Pinjian seemed to have copied the look of the other set, the quality was terrible. On my first try with one of the bands (Black, I think), the little plastic stopper failed, the sheath peeled and the band snapped back and hit me on the chest. I was done right then and there, but Hubby persisted and found that two others did the same thing in short order. What's worse is the "strength" of the bands is labeled all wrong, and while Hubby is not the strongest fella out there, he should not have been able to easily curl all the bands on the handles at once, because if their "pound" ratings are to be believed, he magically gained the ability to freely curl, for about 15 reps, over 100lbs with no real effort. Until two more bands snapped on him. Ouch. (His description of the incident, was, shall we say, more "colorful". I shall not print his missive here)
DSC_0967
This set was dangerous, and upon letting them know what happened on Amazon, the reply was a thundering silence. So, bad product, dangerous product, no customer service or follow up. Thankfully Amazon took the set back with no problems, But this is very dangerous and we're lucky all we ended up with were some red marks and a few shouted expletives. Nothing got broken and no blood was drawn, but I would avoid this set at all costs.
