BUREI® Watch Company's BM-7006-51E Date Chronograph Men's Watch

logo
There are a few things that I've come to expect from budget watch brands. Hollow steel links in the bands. Cheap glass for the crystal. Flimsy hardware. Poor construction and function. But when a watch comes into my home with a high-polished solid stainless steel with a push-button hidden deployant clasp, precision Japanese quartz movement, full functioning chronograph, full water resistance and a sapphire crystal for $68.99?!? Are you kidding me? Burei has got to be insane to be selling that much for that little!
DSC_1056
Any yet, they are indeed offering their quality watches at that price, and after speaking to them a few times I'm reasonably certain they're not nuts, but just nuts for quality and value. I thought the Burei BM-7006-51E Chronograph looked nice on the page when I ordered, but I wasn't prepared for how amazing it looked and fit in person. It's a little bit dressy, and also a little bit sporty, so it can fit almost any occasion and style. And while the bracelet is sold 316L stainless steel polished to a flawless mirror finish, it's not heavy or bulky, but instead sleek and understated, but also refined at the same time. The pushers for the chronograph function are smooth and actuate easily, the interior of the bezel has indices for precise countdowns, the face is an easy to read joy with minute markers and standard numeric markers at the hours, with a small date window between 4 and 5 o'clock. The case is 42mm, which is in the butter zone for Hubby (42-44mm) for size, and the 20mm band looks perfect on the wrist, not too skinny but not so large as to be obnoxious. The push-in crown is simple to use, and the scratch resistant sapphire crystal is such a nice touch and usually reserved for much more expensive timepieces, and rarely used on anything under $100. It's water resistant to 30M as well, with a screw-down case back that makes replacing the battery a breeze. There's the usual Burei attention to detail with the swirls on the clasp, the knurling on the crown, and sizing arrows on the inside of the band. There's also the usual Burei bells and whistles, with the gift box and bag, the warranty card outlining the stellar Burei 30-day, 1-Year and 2-Year warranty times, as well as a easy to read instruction manual should you have any issues. And as if there wasn't enough value added here, Burei gives you a watch sizing tool to make customizing your Burei watch a breeze, at no additional cost. The customer service is quick to respond to any and all issues (usually a 24 hour turnaround time), and they ship free next or same day with Amazon prime.

There's a lot of cheap, poorly made watches out there, and if you're like Hubby and I, we tended to sort on price and say that anything under "X" amount is not going to be made well or made to last. And Burei went and turned our world on it's head by stuffing so much quality into so sharp a package and all the while charging a pittance. At this price these quality timepieces are suitable for holiday gifts, birthday gifts, graduation gifts, or "Just Because" gifts, and they'll think you spent hundreds of dollars. I'm so thankful for the chance to try Burei watches and I'm glad to spread the word, because their name, to me, is now synonymous with Quality. You can't go wrong with Burei. And Hubby can't wait for his next one!

As an aside, Burei has been amazing to me, and I think the rep I've been working with wanted to go above and beyond, and since I was reviewing men's watches for Hubby, thought I should get a little gift as well, and included an adorable little hair clip for me. That's the kind of awesome Burei is. I'm happy o support them and recommend them to everyone I can.

Aposon's Skmei Men's "S-Shock" Outdoor Digital Quartz Watches

As much as Hubby loves his watches, he also needs a few "beaters" that he isn't worried about getting, well, beaten. The tough part about that is finding a nice cross section between affordability and quality so that it doesn't fail the first time it's used. Aposon's digital watches seem to fill that niche nicely.
DSC_1055
The fist thing you notice is they have completely ripped off Casio's venerable "G-Shock" look. I mean, if you'd told me they bought one from Casio and completely copied almost every design feature, I'd believe you. There are some tell-tale changes, in that some components are of much lower quality than the Casio they copied, but all in all you get a cheap digital watch that kind of looks nice and tells the time. Hubby wore it for yardwork two weeks straight, and while he didn't beat it against a wall, the watch still took a beating and can still tell him the time. The watch also has a stopwatch and alarm function, as well as an LED backlight for nighttime and darkness. What's also neat/odd is that you can select one of 5 different colors for that backlight, or a sixth, really weird option for a rainbow effect of it cycling through all the colors, or as hubby started calling it "Disco-o'clock". The main face of the watch tells you the day, date, and time, along with some superfluous dials that serve no purpose whatsoever. The brand name "Skmei" is at the top of the face, just below the puzzling "Japan battery". It also claims to be water resistant to 5 ATM, but warns you not to push any buttons while wet or underwater. The strap is a very malleable plastic, not a softer silicone or rubber, and the stainless steel caseback is smooth against the wrist. Short of disassembling the plastic case, I don't know how or if one could change the battery when it dies, but I suspect at the $11.69 price point, one might be better off just tossing it and buying a new one. The face from edge to edge looks to be in the 48-50mm range and the strap is also wide, probably 23-24mm. I'm guestimating here because Aposon didn't provide these measurements.

For the gym, shop, or heavy work environment where a nicer watch is sure to be destroyed, these Aposon watches are just the right intersection of affordable, reliable and disposable. It keeps fairly accurate time, but oddly I've had to adjust the day (not date) once each on separate occasions, and I would put any stock whatsoever in these watches shock resistance, despite what's on the face. But for under $12 shipped, it's great for a beater, or for kids, as long as you're aware of it's limitations.

MARSEE MSH03 Active Noise-Cancelling Bluetooth Wireless Headset

I've tested more than a few bluetooth wireless headsets, both in ear and over the ear. I have yet to find a set that has what I would consider truly premium sound, But MARSEE's MSH03 set is the closest I've found to fully premium, awesome sound. Except that there's one major, major drawback: The "Active Noise Cancelling" feature ruins the sound! Oh, the irony!

See, I've all but give up on what I would consider an affordable bluetooth headset with honest to goodness premium sound quality. And with most folks downloading low quality rips of music anyways (usually 128 kbps quality, which is usually pretty awful, but also the most ubiquitous), it became a giant game of cat and mouse tracking down high-quality downloads and then getting high quality headphones to listen to it. Everyone claimed HD sound quality to only deliver mediocre at best. But lo and behold, the set MARSEE sent me was pretty darn awesome. With controls for playback right on the earcup, soft, enveloping padding, and a firm, secure feeling on the head, these feel like actual premium headphones without being heavy, and no need to handle them gingerly for fear of all the cheap plastic cracking and breaking! They twist and form to even Hubby's big 'ol pumpkin head with ease. The bluetooth connects and pairs quickly, and no worries if there's an issue with the bluetooth, MARSEE provided a nice, braided-cloth covered cable to take your wireless headset to wired int he blink of an eye! And the sound! Oh, the sound. Crisp, sharp highs, with full, thumping lows, clear mids. These might easily be the best sounding headset I've put on in over 20 years.

And then the wheels came off my little red wagon when I engaged the active noise cancelling. And it all went to pot. The full, rich lows went away, and were replaced instead with a screechy, tinny, horribly shrill sound that absolutely ruined my experience with these headphones. I tried both wireless and wired and the results were the same: The noise cancellation feature ruins the sound and I can't for the life of me find a workaround. At $79.99, these should not have this kind of issue. Emails to the company through Amazon have yet to answered, but if not for the fact that I got this headset at no cost, with this kind of problem they'd have been returned post haste. Yes, the sound is amazing normally. The braided cloth 3.5mm audio cable and flat USB charging cords have a premium look and feel. Yes, the headphones seem to have been engineered with quality in mind and feel premium in both build and materials. The bluetooth pairs quickly and easily, but for $80, the noise cancelling feature is important and with it borking the sound so completely, I can't recommend them as highly as I'd want.

TNT Interactive Twin Turbo Vertical Cooling Stand for Playstation 4

Hubby isn't much of a "gamer", unless you count a few hours of playing Battlefield 4 every week. But even then, from time to time, the Playstation 4 can get pretty heated up, and heat + CPU's = No bueno. So a little extra help in the cooling department is always appreciated, and TNT Interactive's Vertical Cooling Stand is just what the doctor ordered!
DSC_1075
It's a simple thing most folks appreciate, a vertical stand for their shiny new PS4. Not only is it a space-saver, but the PS4's internal fans cool more effectively that way as well. But, with heavy gaming, HD video streaming, or graphics-intense games, it can still tax the internals and they can overheat if not properly cooled, and TNT Interactive's Twin Turbo Cooling Stand steps up to the plate and says "No worries, I got this". Overheating is one of the leading causes of system failures in the Playstation 4, and no one wants their nearly $400 purchase fried when a simple, affordable $17.95 base can stave off so much unhappiness. And while mine was a tight fit for Hubby's PS4, it did eventually settle in and stand comfortably. The TNTi fan base also acts as a USB hub, charging the controllers, or powering other USB peripherals. It's a modest investment that pays huge dividends over the long run, and one I'm glad I got to try.
DSC_1076
It's not all wine and roses. The fans can be slightly on the noisy side, and unlike other units I've seen, there's no way to toggle the fans manually off and on. It's plugged in and on, or it's not. Hubby doesn't have the sound up very loud so as not to scare the bejesus out of me and the dog, so we hear the drone of the fan the entire time. The other is the bright, blue LED light on the front of the base. While Hubby sits slightly off-center from the TV and PS4, I'm usually directly right in front of the light, and it's terribly, terribly bright and annoying. Minor quibbles overall, but valid ones for us. Your mileage may vary. And while there's some base units out there with a few more bells and whistles, and some might even be slightly cheaper, in the end you need to select the one that's best for your tastes, and this one suits us just fine.

Pinjian "ultimate" Resistance Band Set

I've rarely been so completely down on a product that I've returned it. Then again, I've rarely been actually, physically hurt by a product either. Pinjian (or PJian, if the label on the actual product is correct) holds the dubious distinction of being the first in both categories.
DSC_0966
This review will be short, because I don't believe in expending much effort on a product review or a company if they don't warrant it. We've used resistance bands in this house for many, many years. I even got Hubby a big, fancy set from Black Mountain products a few years back. It's still going strong, but rubber, like all things made nowadays, isn't made to last forever, so I thought a set to replace it was due. And while Pinjian seemed to have copied the look of the other set, the quality was terrible. On my first try with one of the bands (Black, I think), the little plastic stopper failed, the sheath peeled and the band snapped back and hit me on the chest. I was done right then and there, but Hubby persisted and found that two others did the same thing in short order. What's worse is the "strength" of the bands is labeled all wrong, and while Hubby is not the strongest fella out there, he should not have been able to easily curl all the bands on the handles at once, because if their "pound" ratings are to be believed, he magically gained the ability to freely curl, for about 15 reps, over 100lbs with no real effort. Until two more bands snapped on him. Ouch. (His description of the incident, was, shall we say, more "colorful". I shall not print his missive here)
DSC_0967
This set was dangerous, and upon letting them know what happened on Amazon, the reply was a thundering silence. So, bad product, dangerous product, no customer service or follow up. Thankfully Amazon took the set back with no problems, But this is very dangerous and we're lucky all we ended up with were some red marks and a few shouted expletives. Nothing got broken and no blood was drawn, but I would avoid this set at all costs.

Colorona Beginner's Acrylic Paint Set

I've fallen back in love with crafting, and one of the things I'll never tire of is paints. Your basic, main colors will always be in need and when I get a chance to try out a new brand, I'm always looking forward to see if they'll be better than my last brand. While they missed that mark by a bit, this Colorona set was decent for kids and beginners, but priced a little too high for the quality of product you receive.
DSC_0937
I've used many, many sets of paint from quite a few companies, and they are always comparable in quality, with a slight edge going to the paints and stains I've bought from U.S. Art Supply for overall quality and value. These Colorona paints miss that mark by a fair bit. They're on the light and loose side, some even slightly runny. The coverage is mediocre, and they don't seem to level at all, which means that every brush stroke will show when it dries. The pigments are not the most vivid or deep, and you need several coats just to get a solid color without the base material showing through, such as painting bare wood. This would be fine for watercolors, where one would expect the grain to show through the lighter paint, but these are supposed to be acrylic paints and have full coverage, and they just do not. The included accessories are great for getting started, with the brushes holding their respective points and edges well with little feathering and no lost bristles. The wood shafts felt light and may not last too long, but I think they're meant to be disposable. The plastic palette is always welcome and does the job it's designed for, and does it well. The sponge is fun for some textures, and seems well suited for these lighter, looser paints. A word of warning about opening these paints: Every set of acrylic paints I've ever used had a small point on the cap to puncture the seal, where these have a silly little star shape, and they will "pop" when punctured and spurp a little paint out. I'd recommend doing this over a sink, and well away from your body to avoid any spills or stains.
DSC_0938
In the end, were the set priced more accordingly, I could see recommending this for kids just getting started, but the lack of coverage and leveling means you might end up with a budding artist frustrated by poor materials. At $21.99, it's priced far too high to be reasonably considered for a "starter" kit with this quality of product. Colorona needs to either step up it's game with quality or drastically lower it's price.

Burei Watch Company's Men's Chronograph Model BM-7011-C01EH

logo
There's a term some like to throw around, "Affordable Luxuries". Usually it's applied to disposable items with little use or value. So I was hesitant to apply that term to a watch, something my husband takes very seriously. But with a small semantic change, you can also drastically change a term's meaning. Burei is Affordable Luxury, in every sense of both words.
DSC_0986

There are cheap watches on the market, a ridiculous amount, made cheaply with poor materials and no craftsmanship, and won't last kissing time. There are quite a few expensive watches as well, with bejeweled automatic movements, Swiss craftsmanship and jaw-dropping price tags. Somewhere int he middle are watches for everyday wear with quality builds and prices that won't change your tax bracket. Some of their names are synonymous with value and quality. Seiko. Casio. Timex. Citizen. There's a new player on the block, and Burei is going to be making a splash in the market very soon!
DSC_0987
Burei is a new watchmaker but you'd never know it from the fit and finish of their products. Priced to meet any budget, this Burei Chronograph has the heft and feel of a watch that cost 10 times as much. The croc embossed caflskin strap (at a healthy 20mm!) with contrast stitching makes a bold statement immediately. But the bright accents on the face are just as striking, and fully functional. The 42mm case and decorative bezel are a wonderful mix of polished and brushed stainless steel. The chronograph pushers are knurled, have a cobalt blue finish on the tips, and are easy to use. The mineral crystal should is bright and clear and should be scratch resistant to all but the most deliberate abuse. The pushers for the chronograph functions are smooth, and the functions are a breeze to control. The screw-down case back is water resistant to 50m, and the Japanese quartz movement is precise and made to last. You get a day and date window at the 3 o'clock marker, and a ticking second hand on the bottom chronograph window. It rests easy on the wrist and doesn't feel heavy, and isn't a huge, obnoxious "wrist clock", but a has an understated elegance that means the watch will be good for work, built well enough for leisure activities, and sharp enough for wearing with a suit.  All of this, and they provide a warranty card, detailed and clear instructions, a presentation box with pillow, and a gift bag, and at just $49.99 shipped from Amazon, this is a STEAL. I mean, I've paid so much more for some of Hubby's watches and gotten sooo much less, I wish I'd known about Burei sooner! These watches make a great gift, an amazing Groomsman gift, or just a Every Day Watch for the man in your life.

But Burei didn't stop there. They stand behind their timepieces. If you're unsatisfied for any reason in the first 30 days, you get a full and complete refund, no questions asked. Any quality issues in the first 12 months? No problem, Burei will refund 100% of the purchase price. Any problems in the first 24 months? Send it back to Burei and they'll get it back to spec for free. And when bought through Amazon, you get a 2-year Asurion warranty instead. That's peace of mind you don't get with most brands, but Burei believes in their product, and I believe in Burei. They have an entire line of quality timepieces that fit any and all styles, from a basic dress watch to a gorgeous automatic line, and prices so attractive, there's no reason to not pick up a few.

Iridesi "Scarlet Edition" Etched Glass Fine Grit Nail Files, Set of 2

I do my own nails on a semi-regular basis, because it's one of those little things I can do for myself that doesn't take a lot of time, and I like taking care of myself from time to time. Part of any good at-home manicure is nail maintenance, and part of good nail maintenance is using good tools, like these nifty Iridesi Etched Glas Nail Files. I think I've found the new gold standard in nail files!
DSC_0968
Different from normal abrasive file sticks, with glued on substances like aluminum oxide, these Iridesi files are one solid piece of acid-etched glass with no glued-on abrasives, and better than a harsh metal file that can leave your nails rough. These Iridesi files will never need to be replaced (unless I'm not careful with them) and will last for many, many years. They're hypoallergenic and so incredibly easy to keep clean as well, just brush the nail dust off and dip them in rubbing alcohol and you're as good as new! There's so many benefits to these, with the only drawback being that because they are glass, you need to handle them with a little bit more care than the usual disposable ones. That means no dropping them on hard surfaces, or just tossing them in your purse and going. But Iridesi thought ahead and anticipated a gal's need to be on the move and provided you with sturdy plastic cases that keep the nail files (and your purse's contents as well!) safe from harm. So, they're function, beautiful, and when you consider that they'll outlive traditional files by a number of years, so affordable I can't see any reason to not pick up a set!

Sometimes things only seem pricier at first, until you do some math and realize that a file that never gets dull is better than buying and replacing nail files all the time. And, there' really no harm in a functional tool looking fabulous too, and Iridesi made sure their files look like a million bucks while keeping your nails looking like a million bucks themselves! I'm sold on etched glass nail files, and I think when you try them you will be too!

Eunectes Watercolor Paint Set with Travel case, Palette & Brushes

I've been wanting to try a watercolor set of paints ever since I rediscovered my "crafty" side, and have been holding out for a decent set at a fair price that would meet my, admittedly limited right now, needs. Eunectes happened along and offered me a chance to try and review their set, so I saw it as kismet and said "You bet!"
IMAG3772 (1)
And I'm extremely glad I did. So far, this is a very high quality set with bright, rich, vivid colors that have extremely high pigments that absolutely ensure that whatever you paint is coated in a luscious wash of color. With 24 colors available in this set, there's nary a color combination you can imagine that you cannot produce. These Eunectes watercolors come up off the block easily and spread evenly for uniform coverage and saturation of color. The color blocks are first ground to fine powder and are "made from the best available pigments and gums" and are non-toxic, with conformance to ASTM D-4236 and EN71-3 standards.  The included travel box ensures that you can store or transport your watercolors safely with no right of hihgly pigmented dust staining the floor or furniture, and the set even comes with a white mixing base paint, and plastic mixing palette, and a starter set of brushes so you're good to go and start creating the moment your Eunectes Watercolor set arrives!

A quick note, Amazon did it's usual atrocious packing job and a few of my watercolor blocks were cracked, as well as a rainbow of paint dust from jostling during shipping covered everything. Should you have the misfortune of getting Amazon's ubiquitous "Stupid Shipping Crew" treatment of your set as well, be sure you thoroughly wipe everything down beforehand with a damp cloth, because these are extremely high pigments and will very vividly stain almost anything it comes in contact with, possibly permanently. Overall I'm thrilled with the quality of this Eunectes Watercolor set, and I highly recommend this set for beginners and experienced painters alike.
