SheSpeaks: The Fast Metabolism Diet Book by Haylie Pomroy

DSCN2292

We gals are suckers for diets, and SheSpeaks must know this. I know I've tried a few in my time, and there's a new one every week, on TV, in the news...it gets to be too much.  So when I got offered Haylie Pomroy's book, "The Fast Metabolism Diet", I was more than a little suspicious, especially when it makes claims like "Lose 20 pounds in 28 days" and "Eat more food and lose more weight".  But The proof is in the pudding (mmmm....pudding), so let's dig in and see what's happening here.

So, Ms. Pomroy is quick to point out she's not a dietitian, but instead a "Body Mechanic".  She even goes a step further by labeling herself a "Metabolism Whisperer". Oh....kay.  But then it starts getting interesting.

DSCN2485

She teaches you how to Unwind stress, Unlock fat, and Unleash your metabolism.  She schools us about bad foods and the toxic environment we've all created for ourselves.  How stress affects your metabolism.  Hmm...this is starting to make a lot of sense and I'm getting veeery interested.  There's a good deal of common sense here, and more than a few uncommon tips that do seem to me like they could be very useful.  Okay. I'm hooked.

The book goes on to talk about how to not be a serial dieter, and to make peace with your food, since it's not the enemy here.  Haylie lists the 5 major players in your metabolism, and gives you very comprehensive food lists that will be appealing to almost any palette. Yes, we're now on a first name basis.  She espouses the benefits of whole natural, and whenever possible, organic foods.  She lists 10 easy "do's" and "don't" of her diet plan, as well as menus, maps, recipes and plans, and you can even keep track right in the book!  Cool!

Lest you be worried that she thinks we're all superhuman diet machines, there's also splurge secrets and a "Fast Metabolism 911" that details emergency plans should our resolve dissolve, or our strength slip.  After all, we're not machines!

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with the book, and surprised that I could pretty seamlessly and harmlessly integrate her plans into my regular rotation.  I think a lot of us would benefit greatly from this, and I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to not just eat, but live healthier.

Swaggable: Tree Hut Renewing Hand Cream in Moroccan Rose

DSCN2489

Let me begin and get straight to the point, the scent of this lotion is intoxicating but in like it smells "sooooo good" such a way. My package arrived today and I think this is one of the few items that I have blogged and shared within 24 hours from receiving. I don't even think it's been 12 hours! My bottle was slightly opened in the package, however it was so little that spilled and occurred recent, because it had not even dried. It smelled like a love note would smell. I have over 40 varieties of roses across our property and I have purchased and been gifted several rose scented items because of my obvious love for them. Double Delight is a variety known for it's scent and beauty, thus the name but rarely does a product that claims to smell like a flower does. I have tried candles, perfumes, even scented paper and it all smells the same like that over commercialized fake rose smell. Desiccated and more like a dry rose would smell than a live one.

DSCN2490

This product smells like roses but living ones! Not over perfume-y but captured those subtle sweet tea notes with a hint of warmth the Shea butter and Moroccan Argan Nut oil provides. Perfection and finally because I have no idea what took so long. I have to admit that I took the bottle out, cleaned it up, washed my hands and applied. In less than 2 minutes I smelled girly :). I went outside to meet my Husband and he was helping me cultivate some African Irises, which I want to transplant but that is whole another story. I stand by him and he says the Irises smell so nice this afternoon and then I hold my wrist out and ask him to sniff.....I get a what is that? Followed by, "you smell good". Don't want to know if I smelled "un-good" before! I don't like to admit but even the doggy followed me around sniffing at my steps so we have a Husband and Doggy approved product in case you had concerns.

Does it work as great as it smells?

YES!!!!! The product combines Organic Shea Butter and Natural Moroccan Argan Nut oils, that create a smooth texture but zero oiliness. The cream also contain Rose Hip Oil, known for it's natural anti-aging properties.  This product is labeled as a renewing hand cream and it did moisturize, plus soothed the rougher edges of my hands and palms. I sometimes (most of the time) do not wear gloves and mean to but when I get the clippers in my hands, to pruning I shall go. Between the roses nicking me, the clippers wearing and causing blisters and calluses, I admit my hands are not too girly looking. I then cook and that causes me to over wash my hands, which leads to over dryness. They really never get a break because when they are dry, they are typing like right now. I want a product that moisturizes, allows my skin to breathe and also does not leave greasy marks on my keyboard. I have gone through many brands and so far only Aveeno sort of but not just there satisfied the quota. Well, Tree Hut does and makes me smell so good. The scent is therapeutic and not pungent because I do suffer from allergies and the last thing I need is a headache. I also like that the formula feels light on the hands and disperses in the same manner.....very easily and a little is needed. I recommend you squeeze the bottle lightly if you are just applying to hands because the bottle likes to burp more than is needed.

Swaggable: Hail Merry Sunflower Seeds

DSCN2475

Another great company that I was introduced to by Swaggable. Hail Merry is a company, which focuses on Superfoods and the Raw food "lifestyle". I am very much into Superfoods and I do dab here in there when it comes to consuming foods in their raw state, to maximize nutrition and absorption/digestion. I love that a company like Hail Merry carries a simple promise close to their heart and what defines their objective of why they exist and create. Anyone can produce anything but do they do it well and safely is the difference. Like not every calorie is created equally, not every sunflower seed is the same. Their promise is to help people achieve higher health, as stated on their webpage.

DSCN2472

I received the Salt n' Pepper Sunflower seeds and love that they come ready to eat. I know many of us usually eat them shelled, but this just delivers a salty mess in your mouth and then that shell you need to dispose of. The seeds gets all the flavor, which is light in salt but you get a nice amount of heat and flavor from the crushed black peppercorns. I also like that what you see is what you get. The product is raw, vegan, gluten-free with zero refined sugars. Gets better. Raw oils and rich in Omegas, plus living enzymes. The packet contains one ounce, which is only 150 calories. It take a lot of sunflower seeds to create an ounce and because of the lack of shell.....it's all pure seeds! I love the ingredient list and it's simplicity. You have organic sprouted sunflower seeds. Celtic sea salt, cracked black pepper.........and that is all! A very pure product indeed.

DSCN2487

But everything good does not always taste good......right?

I love roasted nuts and seeds but have read how the nutrition value is altered through the roasting process. The oils "cook" and you have oxidation and what was really healthy turns to be not so beneficial in the end. I want to maximize what I get out of foods and make it count. For a product that is not roasted, Hail Merry found a way to still make it enjoyable. I like adding pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds to salads so the savory seasoning goes perfect with my array of lettuces. The change in texture is enjoyable and because the seed is not roasted, it tends to be softer but still delivered a nice clean flavor. The seeds are not mealy or dry like other seeds I have tasted in the past. I think this clean flavor is also augmented by the soaking process the seeds are given in order to activate the living enzymes, which are known to aid with digestion. The dehydration comes next and as stated on the package, this is done slowly so this why I think the seed is not dry like others. No one likes jerky texture when it comes to seeds! The handling of the seed from cultivation, packaging to until it reaches your palm is thought through and through. I encourage you to visit their site because they go beyond just seeds and nuts. Hail Merry has an array of products from macaroons, miracle tarts, and Grawnolas.....yeah, you got to read about their granola and that was not a misspell :).

DSCN2477

I respect a company that respects their clients and I hope to be able to share in the future more of their products with you!

Smiley: Advil Allergy & Congestion Relief

DSCN2257

As much as I love Nature, it really does not love me back. I am a hay fever nightmare and Ms. Sneezy should be my middle name. I was always known for caring an entire tissue box around with me in high school because you might as well go with it when you suffer as badly as I do. I already use antihistamine eye drops, a nasal spray and 3 different brands of allergy pills and yes, I still sneeze and suffer. I sometimes think what is the point of taking anything if I still feel the effects and then stop taking stuff to then realize the allergy nightmare could always be darker.

In comes Advil, a box that Smiley sent free of charge, as part of their Advil campaign. One of the pills I take is an OTC and one of the other allergy pills I take is a decongestant. I like that Advil combined both and I'm always celebrating the day I need to take one less pill.

But does it work?

DSCN2258

Advil's Allergy & Congestion relief has several active ingredients that create an effective solution for many allergy suffers. Just the symptoms it provides temporary relief on, is impressive:

  • Temporary relief of symptoms associated with Hay Fever or other upper respiratory allergies and the common cold

  • Runny Nose

  • Itchy/Watery Eyes

  • Itching of the Nose or Throat

  • Sneezing

  • Nasal Congestion

  • Sinus Pressure

  • Headache

  • Minor Body Aches/Pains

  • Fever

  • Reduces Swelling of the Nasal Passages

  • Temporary Restores freer breathing through the Nose

The package should just have a picture of me on the back at this point when it comes to symptoms. I experience all and I love when they get cute and hit me at once.

DSCN2260

Combining Chlorpheniramine Maleate, an ingredient used in prevention of the symptoms of allergic conditions (i.e. rhinitis) with Ibuprofen makes a powerful duo. You get the antihistamine with finally a mild pain reliever because having allergies is not just a bothersome condition that alters how you look (bug eyes anyone?), it hurts and just moving and accomplishing simple tasks is difficult. I get headaches just from the pressure alone. Advil also added Phenylephrine HCL, a nasal decongestant so not only do you combat the allergic reaction but it aids with what allergies cause, plugging up your nose, ears, even eyes!

One tablet lasts 4 to 6 hours and I like being able to not medicate when my allergies have subsided. Advil states to not take more than 6 pills in a 24 hour period, unless physician approved.

Smiley: Arm & Hammer Sensitive Whitening Toothpaste with Orajel

DSCN2057

I was fortunate enough to be a part of Smiley's Arm & Hammer Sensitive toothpaste campaign, and let me tell you, it comes at the very best time or year. Who doesn't like ice cream, icy fruit smoothies, popsicles (don't judge me), and all manner of frozen treats that are part and parcel staples of summer? But then there's that one spot, that one tooth, that makes enjoying them nearly impossible. I'm here to tell you that thanks to Arm & Hammer teaming with Orajel, kiss that sensitive tooth (or teeth) goodbye this summer. Oh, and lets not forget that Arm & Hammer has also included baking soda, gentle whitening and all the anti-cavity goodness to make good oral health anything but an afterthought,
I tried this product for two weeks. But not before confirming that "owie" spot at my molar that has a filling. You know the one, the one that reminds me I had one too many sour gummy worms that one Halloween. The one that makes me dread my frozen pineapple spears, my blended berries-and-ice smoothies, my dark chocolate-covered frozen nanners. Yup. Still ouchie. But right about the two week mark, I decided it was time. Sure enough, I was able to indulge.  Happily.  Fully.  Now, I just have to worry about brain freeze!

Let's not forget that this is Arm & Hammer, teaming with Orajel, who has taken the hassle out of putting some baking soda into your toothpaste. I'm not ashamed to admit that I've added a little from time to time to bump up the clean, but this is a much better way to get it in there. Tartar reduction, anti-cavity power, and a pleasant, minty flavor that left your mouth feeling clean, and then there's the reassurance that you're protected with Orajel. This is a truly all-in-one product that does it all.  I'm a fan, and I think you will be too.

DSCN2060

What are some of the Benefits:

  • Relief from painful tooth & nerve sensitivity

  • Low abrasion formula

Swaggable: Detour Neapolitan Whey Protein Bars

DSCN2239

I always seem to be playing catch-up and somehow think if I hurry up in the morning and make concessions, like not eating a real breakfast, I can get ahead of everything I need to do. You would think I would learn but I always have an excuse on why cutting on breakfast the other times did not work, but will work again today. I've fooled myself many times so I started resorting to having meal replacement bars, energy bars, snack bars, protein bars.....well anything that fills the hunger hole but trying to fill it with something nutritious. I like fast too but the last thing I want to do, is go to a drive-thru somewhere to purchase something in a bun that will hinder me more when it comes to nutrition and energy.

I have consumed many bars from Luna to even store brands. The amount I pay never reflects the taste some of them have that I then label them "diet bars" because they taste so poorly, that you only can eat 1/4 to maybe 1/2 of them on a brave day. It's called the "I make this bar so bad, starving a little feels better" diet plan.

I was happy when I was accepted to try out Detour bars that showed a big 15 grams of protein on their package. Being derived from whey, I like this because sometimes when I am running errands with my Husband, we share a bar together and I don't always need the full 15 grams. I get the bar and it makes me think of those ice cream bars I had back when I was a child.

DSCN2276

Opening package time: The scent is pleasant and sweet with a hint of chocolate. They dip the bar in a milk chocolate "flavored" coating and then a white design on top so the product looks pleasing. I slice a square off and notice that the texture within the bar does not resemble the picture on the product card. I look at the back of the packaging and notice it may be the "soy chips", so that may be why.

Taste Test: You have a bar that is not too soft or hard when you bite, just a little granular in texture but many of these energy/protein bars tend to be mealy. The texture is not so off that it prevents you from eating it. When I think of Neapolitan, I think of the three flavors commonly associated, Strawberry, Vanilla and Chocolate. The bar's flavors, both natural and artificial start to taste fruity and then comes that taste, almost like film that covers your tongue with the artificial sweeteners. It's over powering and starts to permeate up to your nose.

I can say I have had worse but unfortunately this is not a bar I would seek out due to the ingredients list. Great that it's low in sugars, 4 grams for this "light" version versus 8 grams for their normal bar but the sucralose and list of artificial ingredients does not justify the price point. The market is flooded with these bars that if you are "going to play ball", you need to hit it on the mark when it comes to flavor and this is me even being flexible on texture. I have had bars with simple ingredients that taste better and my body can absorb with ease, but this lab experiment on the Detour packaging will leave my system going, "huh".

Swaggable: Smart Pants Gummy Vitamins for Grownups

DSCN2248

I never understood why there are forms of vitamins that are different for children and adults. I understand percentages when it comes to supplements but all because I grew up, it does not mean candy was forgotten. As a kid, I loved "gummy" anything and devoured many bears, worms, fruits....now, if it had "sour" in the description, it must be mine!

I was accepted by Swaggable and invited to try gummy vitamins from Smarty Pants. Even the character on the package has a smile so it's not only me who loves these things. Being that I have to "play" an adult, things like exactly what is in them matters.

Smarty pants are an all-in-one Multivitamin, plus Omega 3s and Vitamin D. The Omegas are 3 DHA, EPA, Vitamin D3, plus 9 other key nutrients. Organic sweeteners are only used with no High Fructose Corn Syrups! Major plus for me there but it gets better. The flavors are all natural and the colors/dyes are derived from natural sources too. For those with allergies or sensitivities, the vitamins are Gluten and Casein free. Their products are made in my home state of California in a GMP (good manufacturing practices) certified facility and they have their supplements 3rd party lab tested for purity.

DSCN2249

Six gummies are one serving but because they are delicious, I look forward to munching on them. They breakdown 6 gummies to a total of 50 calories for all six. You get vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, Thiamin, B6, Folic Acid, vitamin B12, Iodine, Zinc and don't forget the Omegas I previously mentioned, plus a little other supplements. What I also like about the servings being broken down to 6 gummies, I can eat them through out the day versus taking one vitamin in the morning that my body purges out by mid afternoon. I get my levels "up" and if I get more vitamins from my meals on a particular day, I can eat less gummies. I am all about products that fit my needs and Smarty Pants obviously put them on and made a product that I can mold to my daily needs.

DSCN2252

Taste matters: The gummies I received were are all orange in color and have a citrus taste that you get with "sour" like candy gummies. The citric acid hits and covers up the slight vitamin taste that you may note. That vitamin taste is so minute that I notice if you chew rather than suck on the gummy, it barely leeches out. I keep going to them and look forward when I "take" one so that gives you an idea about how I feel about the flavor. They are shaped like small gum drops with sugar crystals surrounding them. I also like that the texture is excellent because I get no pieces stuck to my teeth. The product dissolves without any issues like you experience with corn syrup laden candies.

Come join us and Celebrate being Orgullosa with P&G products and you won't leave hungry too!

DSCN1952

Have I told you yet how much I love being part of the Orgullosa family? Well, in the past I have thrown several parties for VocalPoint, which is part of the Procter & Gamble group. Orgullosa is also a division of that group and it's about having pride in our family and heritage. You celebrate by sharing P&G products and hosting an event. These gatherings are always a hit and I usually gather a group of friends and start making memories. At this event, I received several new products and some old favorites to share.

The kit included such brands like Olay, Secret, Crest, Downy, Always, Tampax, Covergirl and Tide.

You get samples and coupons to share with guests, along with trinkets like a folding (compact) mirror and even a fashionable bracelet.

I tried the items out before sharing with guests and because my event was in early May, I went with a Cinco de Mayo/Mother's Day theme. I figure celebrating two holidays equals twice the fun!

Let's get started.....

DSCN2099

Tide Pods- The idea is to only need one capsule to clean a full load. The capsule has three colors, white for the detergent, then orange and blue colored swirls for the stain remover and brightener. I first like how easy it is to use and it's HE safe. The scent is Spring Meadow, which is light and pleasant. I like the aspect of just throwing a pod in the washer with dirty clothes and only worrying about softener. I was skeptical but must admit that my grey colored load came out clean, without any stains on any article of clothing. The clothes also did not feel stiff or stripped, like many detergents tend to be harsh on cottons and linens. This was a favorite with many guests because of the ease of use. We all dislike those heavy detergent boxes and feeling like doing laundry is close to making lab experiments, when you start adding boosters like stain remover, whiteners, brighteners.....you name it. These pods provide a guarantee clean and because the stain remover is included, if I miss a stain it really does not turn into a big deal.

DSCN2103

Downy Unstoppables- I have used these enhancers before and love them. What I had not tried was the "pink" colored scent, which is called Shimmer. Don't worry, your clothes will not be full of glitter but the name refers more to the enticing smell these scent boosters create. They compliment well with the other liquid Downy softeners you purchase, so it's not like throwing in a bottle of perfume with your wash. Think a long lasting clean scent! I love using them on bath mats, towels to bed sheets. They are very easy to use, just shake and pour into the drum, plus it's safe for HE washers. They work so it's hard to stop using them. I also have found other purposes for them like leaving an open packet under the sink and say bye-bye to trash smells. You can also pour some of the flat beads into a tray and keep it in the bathroom. You control how much "boost" you want and I like that because some articles of clothing, like gym clothes needs it! We also found ourselves sniffing the packet and they even encourage it in the stores, where you push on the bottles to smell them.

DSCN2106

Olay 2-in-1 facial cloths- I sometimes can't wait to get home and wash my face and it's not that I don't like make-up, but the experience is like washing the day away. I now know I am home and ready to relax. I have been there where mascaras to lip glosses creating stains on white colored towels so these facial cloths actually save my towels. So effective that they even remove my waterproof mascara! It gets better and because this is an Olay product, it's more than just a "wet nap" for your face. The facial cloths are formulated with pro-vitamin B5, beta-hydroxy and witch hazel. The cleanser not only washes your face effectively in a gentle manner but also tones your skin . I never break out after using the Olay 2-in-1 cloths and it's because the leave my skin clean! Being that this is an Olay product, the girls were fanatic about it. Everyone wanted to know what Olay item P&G had included so eager that I think they did not appreciate me leaving this one to the end to present.

DSCN2109

Always/Tampax Radiant Collection- This item is the end all to having to hide that tampon or pad. I have had those moments when I am hunting for a pen to just have a tampon pop out of my purse. Soooo not pretty! The packet included a purse that allows you to store both tampons and pads neatly. This little purse was created for this purpose so everything fits as it should, brilliant! They also included 1 Always pad, 3 liners and 2 tampons. Orgullosa events really takes care of us and this is one example on why they are so popular. You get introduced to new brands in such a fun way but also take home samples!

DSCN2096

Secret Clinical Strength- I have not tried the clinical formulas but we have those stressful days that do not always come from just physical exertion, but just the everyday stuff from traffic, meetings, kids, and even sometimes husbands. I name no names! We were sent the "ooh-la-la lavender" scent, which I appreciate as lavender has calming effects. I now know to sniff my underarms if the need arises :). I tried the solid and was afraid of maybe it being more powerful would mean more drying, and even a little harsher to the delicate skin in that area but I am happy to report it is not. I can describe it as having a double-guarantee. You have extra insurance if needed and if not, you will be fine. With warmer months approaching I also feel better and even safer if I sweat. I'm a girl and armpit odor is bad as it is but we are suppose to smell like flowers :)

DSCN2095

Crest 3D White- I use(d) a brand that starts with an "A" after trying several brands years ago. I first must admit I am a whitening teeth fanatic. The whiter the better because I drink pomegranate and cranberry juices daily, which is great for my body but not kind to my teeth. I am always in "preventing mode" so I brush my teeth and then rinse with a whitening solution afterwards. I think tooth health is essential not only to how our body is feeling but also in how we look. Put on all the make-up you want but yellow tooth will ruin a look. The box on the crest 3D white states it removes up to 80% of surface stains. I notice no asterisk after but note it says, "Up to". Okay, let's put it to the test and I did a week and a half before the Orgullosa event. My results can easily be stated by one phrase, "I dropped the "A" brand for the Crest 3D". I have noticed on the bottom edges where your teeth meet the gums are whiter and I feel my teeth are cleaner after brushing. The Icy Cool Mint flavor tastes a little like bubblegum but because it works, I just will flashback to my younger years when brushing. Great way to start and end your day :)

DSCN2302

Covergirl Lashblast Volume Mascara- I am currently a user of this mascara because at my last Orgullosa event, they included it. Having an extra tube of mascara is always a plus and that does not mean I won't still rave about it either. I love the brush and the wand makes application a cinch. The brush has fine bristles and in large quantities, so you get perfect separation without over-working the lashes. The formula also does not clump heavily while you apply. I always disliked getting the perfect separation of lashes but needing more mascara, that once you apply the right amount, it looks like spider legs because your lashes decided to meet and now you have 5 very thick lashes. Not with this one and I have in error paid big bucks for other brands when all along Covergirl's Lashblast hung on a peg at my local store. I have learned that paying high prices does not mean high quality in cosmetics. Try this mascara and you will be thankful!

Not done yet......

Orgullosa included a mirror that flips open and stays open. The flip cover allows you to set it where and in the position you want without it falling. I have compacts and they are always propped against a candy dish, tissue box, whatever will hold it but not anymore. Another simple and practical idea that rarely gets used!

DSCN2108

We also all received bracelets with the Orgullosa trademark. Flaunt it and it comes with a beautiful quote too. I love the strength they encourage us to have and these small rewards are very appreciated because we all need reminders....it's what keeps us going.

DSCN2111

Included where also coupons to save you money. There were coupon booklets for each guest and not only for all the brands but others they Venus, Oral B, Pampers, Pantene to Charmin. We appreciate these booklets because one thing our group has in common, is making that dollar stretch. We are proud of the savings we acquire all year because they help us provide more for our families.

No party is complete without the food. Guests must be fed as this is a celebration. Orgullosa does not miss a mark and I present to you, the Orgullosa Red Velvet cake with cream cheese frosting! Oh, my!

DSCN2229

Celebrating our heritage with Carnitas that we made into mini street tacos tacos.  Guests could also make salads as they liked and I had a guest bring black beans and rice.

DSCN2220

Can't have plain tacos, we need salsas and all the trimmings too.  A guest made the Molca red sauce from scratch!

DSCN2221

Habanero and Serrano Pepper Nachos with Cotija Cheese!

DSCN2219

I encourage you to sign-up with Orgullosa because not only could you host parties like I do but there is more to the programs they offer. VocalPoint and Orgullosa have samples, coupons, advice, and even support! It's one of the best decisions I ever made was to join and I think my guests agree too.

Hagensborg Chocolates: Wild Boar Bars

DSCN2240

Who doesn't love chocolate? Who doesn't love exotic chocolates? Hagensborg Chocolates is based in Vancouver Canada and makes chocolates using European techniques. They have a cute little theme and story in their biography, which introduces you to "Snuffly" the pig, frogs that are princes, fairy godmothers and even a castle. There is even a piggy family with names! I personally like Rose because she has wings. Very whimsical and gives their products that little touch of love. Their products are accessible from the United Kingdom, United States, Japan, to Canada.

I had tried two of their truffle pigs and loved them! They were milk chocolate, which is not my first choice in the chocolate world but after having them, I was craving more so I knew I had discovered a good thing.

My parcel arrived with their newest creation, the Wild Boar bars. Like their other wonderful creations, the Wild Boars have a story. They travel the world and catch ingredients from each content and incorporate it into their magical bars. The boxes alone are eye-catching and once you open the box, you see little "chomp" bites along the bar made by these continental boars (this time, I couldn't blame Hubby). No detail is not missed by Hagensborg Chocolates from the molds they used to make these bars, to the ingredients added. My parcel included two "passports", Italy and Indonesia. So let's begin.....

DSCN2241

Italy- Made from the milk chocolate family and described to include truffle salted almonds which are toasted. The almonds are sprinkled with olive oil, Ritrovo (rare black truffle) truffle and salt. The bar contains 85% organic ingredients and also 39% Cocoa.

DSCN2278

The taste test: After getting over how cute the bar is and reading all the information on the box, it is almost like a mini travel brochure so I appreciated the escape. Every ingredient is of the finest quality and they even list origins for each, like the almonds being from California. I find that when I break off a piece, it almost melts down when you bend it because the chocolate is so soft and velvety. I put a piece in my mouth and allow it to melt. The texture is smooth and even though salt is listed in the flavor ingredients, you get zero granules from it. No crystallization, just a perfect creamy creation! I love the flavor of the chocolate alone as I agree with their statements, it is of fine quality. I eat many "fleur de sel" products, so I am familiar with how they are paired with caramels to different degrees of Cocoa. I did find my first bite to be salty if you allow it to melt and dissolve in your mouth, but not so salty that I did not bite again. My second bite I chewed and it was a perfect balance of flavors. The almonds are not whole, so every bite allows you to get enjoy a small chunk. You do pick-up a slight earthy and grassy notes that may derive from the olive oil and truffle they added. I did not find the flavors overwhelming and they did compliment the bar well. I did enjoy the almonds but just wished I had a few more chunks with every bite.

DSCN2242

Indonesia- This is the one I was skeptical and unsure about and you will soon know why. You have 71% Cocoa in this bar, plus 85% Organic ingredients. This Boar bar is described as rich dark chocolate with cashews, spiced with garlic, chilies and lime. The cashews originate from Indonesia and the seasonings added are in dried form. I have had "spiced" chocolates but never one with garlic added to it or even lime. I was super curious.

DSCN2279

The taste test: You uncover the bar and the minute you cut it, you perfume your surroundings with a delicious chocolate smell. Any apprehension I had about the flavors floated away that instant. When something gives off such a delicious aroma, it can't be ignored! I take off a corner and this chocolate is harder in texture as it created a snapping noise, not like the milk chocolate boar bar. I put a piece in my mouth and allow it to melt and I love, love, love their dark chocolate. Great quality and texture. Perfect amount of acid you get from the Cocoa but no bitter or wax like texture you get from cheaper brands. I can easily state this in the top three of dark chocolate makers I prefer to have and enjoy! You get almost get a coffee deepness that comes through, somewhat like a perfect espresso. Once again, very smooth and velvet in texture. The cashews are chopped and knowing the nut is buttery in nature, it just compliments the dark chocolate flavors. I never knew cashews went so well with dark and I hope to see this combination in the future. This bar had a good balance of nut and chocolates, so I was happy. The chilies come through but do not rest on your tongue where you would be overwhelmed, the flavor rests towards the back of your throat and I liked how it did not interfere with my enjoyment. Just a touch of spice flavor but no serious heat that burns. The garlic does not come through like it would imagine on garlic bread. You get the garlic flavor and it's not roasted, more of like when it's raw (untouched). I did find certain bites left a bitter taste if they were heavier on the garlic. The chocolate is so delicious that I did not care. I just kept eating and had to stop myself.

I recommend Hagensborg Chocolates and I do not view them as a gimmicky company, but one that seriously knows how to create chocolate. If I had a store near by that carried their chocolates, I fear what would happen to my waist line. Many "Chocolatiers" do not have a passion into their art and just think of how they can stretch a cocoa bean to yield the maximum profit. Hagensborg has taken the route of "What is the best way I can showcase this cocoa bean?". I highly respect a company that does this and I was a fan before of the brand, but the boar line secured that position solidly. If you can add uncommon ingredients to chocolate and still be delicious, you seriously know what you are doing!

Please take a trip over to Hagensborg Chocolates and fall in love with their piglets and boars.

Crowdtap: Conttonelle Clean Care Products

When it come to clean, it's really hard to compromise. Far too often we all get tempted by bargain brands, "cheap" prices, "ultra, mega super jumbo" rolls, "club-sized" pricing, and every other gimmick under the sun, it all circles back to clean.

DSCN1868

I was a Kirkland Signature user for years. It was hard to compete with the quantity for the price, especially with prices rising so fast for home basics like TP, paper towels, and cleaning products. Then, as all Kirkland products seem to do anymore, the quality of the tissue started to slide. It took more to get clean. It wasn't strong enough. Then, it happened:

The lint.

We all dread it, we've all dealt with it, we all hate it. And Kirkland had it in spades! And not just on your person. It was everywhere. With every tear it was snowing in the bathroom. And that was it. It was time to find a new brand. For so long we assumed the only choices were cheap, red or blue. Then we discovered Cottonelle. Crowdtap, in it's impeccable timing, offered us a chance to take Cottonelle's line of personal cleaning products, and not just for us, for all our invited guests as well! Hot diggity!

I can safely say that this household is hooked on the Cottonelle Clean Routine. We got plenty of TP, and Cottonelle's moist flushable wipes too! Let's just say if you're not using these, you only think you're getting clean! Cottonelle really went all-out with the quality, too. Quilted, thick, strong, dual-ply. I can't believe we spent so much time with so many other inferior brands. If your'e still thinking you're saving money by buying cheap, take it from me, you're sacrificing clean at the altar of cheap, and it's not a sacrifice you want to be making.

I received the above product free of charge from Crowdtap.  I am not obligated to provide a favorable/positive review, just my honest opinion.  My review is based on my experience with the product, which may differ from yours.

Fresh Pineapple Upside Down Buttermilk Cake

DSCN2227

Everyone loves pineapple upside down cake. If someone doesn't, then they haven't had it made right. Little things make the biggest differences. Like, I always just used canned Pineapple. One day I had a fresh pineapple on the counter and decided to try my recipe with it. Best ever, and I have never gone back! One of my easier cakes to make and perfect during the warmer months. Bakes quickly and you can serve it warm, room temperature or even cold. The buttermilk keeps the cake moist and gives it a unique flavor that is not typically associated with cakes. So, I hope this breaks up the usual and you enjoy it as much as we do.

Let's begin....

Glaze:

  • 4 tablespoons of Butter

  • 3 tablespoons of Maple Syrup

  • 1/2 cup of Brown Sugar

Fruit:

  • 1 whole fresh Pineapple (canned may be used if needed)

  • 6 Maraschino cherries

Cake Batter:

  • 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter (softened)

  • 2/3 cup of Sugar

  • 2 large Eggs (room temperature)

  • 2/3 cup of Buttermilk (room temperature)

  • 1 tablespoon of Maple Syrup

  • 1/2 teaspoon of Vanilla Extract

  • 1/2 a Vanilla Bean

  • 1 1/2 cups All-Purpose Flour

  • 1/2 teaspoon of Salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon of Baking Powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda

  • 1/4 teaspoon (or to taste) of Cinnamon and Nutmeg

First you start by cutting your pineapple slices and coring the rounds. Set those aside and begin making your glaze.

DSCN2119

DSCN2128

Add your butter, brown sugar and maple syrup to a nonstick pan.

DSCN2122

Over medium-low heat, you begin to dissolve the sugar.  I usually use a silicone spatula to make sure undissolved sugar crystals do not get stuck to the sides of the (non-stick) pan. Keep stirring and increase the heat slightly. You will reach a gentle boil as you stir and then continue cooking for about 45 seconds, and then remove the glaze from the stove.

DSCN2123

I take a large lasagna pan (sprayed with cooking spray)

DSCN2124

Pour the glaze carefully over and evenly.  Then place your pineapple slices carefully over the glaze.

DSCN2130

Next comes the cherries.

DSCN2133

Start your cake batter by first blending the unsalted butter with the sugar, until nice and fluffy.

DSCN2134

Add one egg and blend until it is incorporated into the mixture.

DSCN2135

Then add the second the egg and fully incorporate into the mixture.

DSCN2137

Follow with the buttermilk, maple syrup and vanilla. I tend to mix all three and pour them at the same time.  Pour only half of the mixture in.

DSCN2141

Follow by adding the 1/2 Vanilla Bean.

DSCN2144

Then comes the dry ingredients. I mix the flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg in a large bowl.

DSCN2151

You then take half of the dry ingredients and add it to the mixer. Mix well until everything is wet, remembering to scrape the sides of the bowl.

DSCN2153

I slowly then add the second half of my buttermilk mixture intermediately with the left over half of the dry mixture. I do this so I do not over whip the batter, since this tends to produce a dryer cake if you over beat it. You will end up with a nice smooth mixture by halving the wet and dry, and not over beating.

DSCN2154

Once everything is incorporated, I take the batter and drop spoonfuls into the pan with the glaze and pineapple. I do six large spoonfuls so I can get a nice even layer without disrupting the fruit's placement.

DSCN2156

DSCN2157

Place in oven at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until the cake is springy to the touch. You can use a toothpick to check if the cake is done too.

DSCN2162

The sides will be bubbling!

DSCN2164

Allow the cake to cool down for 15 minutes before flipping. I usually place a glass cutting board on top of the cake pan.

DSCN2199

Flip.

DSCN2203

Remove pan.

DSCN2208

I allow for it to cool a bit more and then start cutting, usually 10 minutes.

DSCN2222

Serve with ice cream or whipped cream if desired!

DSCN2226

You can store the cooled cut cake slices in the fridge (just wrap in plastic) and it holds very well. Enjoy!
