Gurin Professional Rechargeable Oral Irrigator and Flosser

gurinlogo

From time to time, we get to try products we've been curious about for years but never pulled the trigger on. This is one of those, and it's one I'm glad we got to try. Gurin's Professional Water Flosser is a great addition to your oral care routine, and at a price that makes it affordable for everyone.
DSC_0825
Brushing your teeth is only one step in a complete oral care routine. Flossing is essential, and I've come to believe a good mouthwash is as well. But a "water flosser" like this Gurin Oral Irridator will also become indespensible when you see all the little bits left behind after brushing and flossing. I know I did. It took a bit to get the hang of it, and I can say from unfortunate experience that the pump is powerful enough to send a stream of water across the room. The three settings are great, from Normal to Soft to "Pulse", there's a setting there for just about everyone's sensitivity levels. And, should you want to be a bit OCD like us in this house, you can use mouthwash as well as water for an extra level of "clean". Keeping your gums healthy is a must for strong teeth that'll last us our entire lives, and this Gurin Professional Water Flosser is a fantastic way to really keep your gums, and by extension, your teeth, healthy and strong. At only $37.95 (at the time of this writing), it's cheaper than a trip to the dentist, too, and much less than products of comparable quality and features, by as much as 2/3! And for those with braces, this is a godsend for getting little bits of food out and keeping your mouth fresh. I WISH there was something like this way back when I had my braces!!
DSC_0826
The battery is rechargeable, and the supplied AC adapter gives the unit a full charge in about 4 hours, and it goes on and on and on from a single charge. I can't see any documentation as to the type of battery used (the Amazon add says "NiCad"), so I would make a point of charging it only when needed and not over-charging or leaving it plugged in for prolonged periods of time. I do wish it was a NiMH or Lithium Ion battery, for longevity's sake. Gurin's Water Flosser also comes with 2 color-coded heads for multiple users, and while you can buy replacement heads on Amazon, contacting Gurin about your first set of replacement heads by email with the subject line "Interested in Free offer for Gurin Oral Irrigator" will get a you a couple of free heads. If I had to take issue with anything about this product, it's that I wish there was a way to "dial down" the volume of liquid that is dispensed, as I found myself dribbling from the chin from time to time. Hubby didn't have as much of an issue, by he has a giant mouth on his big 'ole pumpkin head, so of course he'd have no problems. I would also not recommend ditching the string floss entirely, as this should only be used to supplement your flossing, not replace it entirely. Other than that, this has become an essential part of my daily oral care routine. You should really try it, you won't know how you got along without it!

Ozeri Deluxe Stainless Steel Frother with 4 Attachments

Ozeri
I have been disappointed time and time again by frothers, because they're made so shoddily and don't last. I've bought several, from big national brands to smaller, lesser-known brands and to a one, they've all failed. I think, finally, I've found a frother that will be with me for the long haul. And I have Ozeri to thank.
DSC_0808
Most frothers seem to made to be uni-taskers, as well as disposable. Use it to froth milk and then put it away, hoping it works the next time you need it. Ozeri, however, made their Deluxe Stainless Steel Frother to be used all over the kitchen , for multiple jobs, and to last and look good doing it. The frother comes with 3 different attachments, and a spare frothing head. The beater and whisk heads seem dainty, but the whisk held up to a couple of eggs in a cup for an egg wash, and the beater did just fine for a small amount of ganache for a cake. Ozeri refers to it as a "cocktail mixer", but I've retasked it in this house since we don't drink cocktails. It was dynamite, however, for a vinaigrette for my salad. Yay. Powered by two AA batteries, it has two settings (low and high, up to 15,000 RPM's!!) to meet the needs of whatever task you throw at it. And the stainless steel body is a cinch to clean and feels solid in your hands. The top mounted clicker to turn it off and on is easy to use and reach as well. It comes with a matching stainless steel stand, but it's a little finicky about placement and because there's heft to the frother can become unbalanced easily, so I don't always use it. But that's a minor quibble about what I consider a bulletproof product. After a soild 2 weeks of use, this frother has had nary a hiccup and I foresee it becoming a long standing member of our little family. Ozeri even included the batteries this time (How I love that!) so you're good to go right out of the box.

Frothers come and frothers go, and anyone who's had one can attest to that. Nothing's more frustrating than a product you come to depend on and it fails you. Ozeri understands this and makes their products top-notch and made to last. But I know that Ozeri would stand behind their products 100% if for some reason it failed you, and for that, as well as the above reasons, I recommend this product highly!

Blu Monaco Modern Premium File Box Desk Organizer Set

If you're like me, you have a pile of papers somewhere that you've been meaning to get to and sort, organize or file. I have several. My home office's desk has usually got several piles, organized by order of importance, strewn about it. So when the opportunity arose to try out a set of Premium Home Organizer boxes from Blu Monaco Modern, I was so very game, and I'm so very glad I did.
DSC_0822
To start, Amazon's "Stupid Shipping Crew" threw the package in a box with a couple of air pillows, and somehow assumed that was sufficient to keep these from getting beaten up during shipping. Suffice to say, it was not. But Blu Monaco immediately shipped out a set that was packaged moderately better and arrived pristine. I would have liked a little insert that described how one put the boxes together, but thankfully I did figure it out. These File Organizers are not just made well, out of paper covered heavy-duty cardboard, and they're a joy to look at, as they can make the unsightly piles of papers on your desk, kitchen table, or coffee table a thing of the past. With a metal-rimmed label on the outside spine, it's also easy to organize and store things like magazines (sorted by subject matter, natch) that sometimes are of irregular sizes and make storage a nightmare. I know I have more than a few cooking magazines with recipes for days that now, instead of stacking in my bookshelf , will have a more permanent and stylish home. They're sturdy enough that I can pack them with papers, receipts, or magazines and never have to worry about them falling apart either.

If I had one complaint, and it's the usual one, it's that at $25.99, they're pricey. At $19.99 they'd be priced perfectly, and they'll have a hard time being competitive with other brands on Amazon or your local office supply store. But they are very well made, and look very sharp on the shelf, so the value of them is really up to you. I liked them I recommend them, and the seller's service is top-notch.

Ohuhu Extra Heavy Duty Waterproof Bike Cover

While this product might seem like it's out of my wheelhouse, I'm always happy to find and repurpose products. Such is the case with this Ohuhu "Extra Heavy Duty" bicycle cover. While I don't own a bicycle or motorcycle, I did get my husband a new lawnmower recently, and rather than just leave it out in the elements, I was fortuitously offered this bicycle cover to review, and as luck would have it, it fit the mower to a tee.
DSC_0734
It's roomy, and has an elastic strip along the bottom to ensure a semi-custom fit. It does a spectacular job keeping rain, dirt and dust off of what it covers, and looks kinds nifty to boot, all sliver with sporty black. The plastic buckle on the bottom ensures that it will stay securely over whatever you cover as well. The only issue I have is the labeling of "Extra Heavy Duty". It's tissue paper thin and I have no doubt that left to the elements it would tear or be ruined quite quickly. Fortunately, what I'm keeping covered is being kept in a shed, so barring major weather events it only has to protect the mower from dust, dirt and the occasional errant drops of water, so it should last a good long time. When not in use, it can be folded up and kept in the included carry bag.
DSC_0733
It's an adequate product that will do exactly what it's designed to do, but calling it "extra heavy duty" is really a bit of a stretch and leads one to believe it's thicker or sturdier than it actually is, and I'd be careful leaving it exposed to the elements for any extended period of time. But if your expectations are tempered, you'll find this Ohuhu cover a decent value for the price.

Ozeri Ultra 42" Adjustable Oscillating Tower Fan

Ozeri Corporation Logo_full
We are no strangers to Ozeri in this house. In fact, we're huge fans, no pun intended. They make some very high quality products that are priced very competitively with competitors, and stand behind their products 100%. So it should come as no shock that their latest offering to us is also a slam dunk, the Ozeri Ultra 42" Tower Fan.
DSC_0613
Not our first Ozeri fan, but quickly becoming our favorite. We had an opportunity to really try this fan out before the weather in SoCal took a turn and the temps dropped all on their own, and we came away impressed. Much like our last Ozeri fan, this one really moves a lot of air and cools down a space quick. It has a very quiet but powerful motor, and it's adjustable height and oscillation means you can customize it to any space. It's also got a slim, slender profile, so it's not taking up a bunch of space in a small room, and blends seamlessly and stylishly into the background in a large room. It looks as fancy as it functions, and it functions so well too! The included remote control is, in my opinion, much better than than the included slim remote included with the Ozeri 3X, and is more substantial. Where one had to be closer and almost directly in front of the fan to get the 3X remote to function, the Ozeri Ultra's remote works from anywhere and at any angle. The base is wide and sturdy and means your fan wont be tipping over, even when put of high pile carpet like ours. There's cord storage in the base so you don't have to worry about a long unsightly cord on the floor to trip over. # speed settings, 90 degree oscillation, quiet almost noiseless function, wireless remote, and a big, bright LCD screen that even tells you what the ambient room temperature is! You can even assemble it without a single tool! There's just so much to love with this new Ozeri Ultra 42" fan that I might send the 3X Tower fan to Hubby's workout room from here on out!

It might not seem like the weather is optimal now for a tower fan, but trust me when I tell you it's better to grab the products you don't need now (but will later!) today than be the one left wanting in a few months when the temperatures start to rise and you're left scrambling to get a product you could have had on hand already! And you know that with Ozeri products, they put customer satisfaction number one, and do anything and everything they can to make you a happy camper! Get your Ozeri Ultra fan today and beat the Spring rush!

Kitchen Hearts Silicone Baking Mat Set

I do more baking than anyone I know. As a result, I've got a wealth of tools to assist me and I'm always on the lookout for something new and innovative to help me along. Over the years I've graduated from wax papers and sprays to parchment and silicone mats. If you've used one, you know they quickly become indispensable. But Kitchen Hearts had something I've yet to try: A ROUND silicone pizza mat!! Oh, baby!
DSC_0738
Silicone mats are probably one of the most versatile tools in a kitchen. They can be used for a multitude of things, and be used hundreds of times before needing to be replaced. From a splatter-catcher in the oven, to making french fries, cookies, macaroons, or biscuits, there's almost no limit to the goodies one can make on a silicone mat. They clean up with a little warm soapy water, need no oils or sprays to be non-stick, and virtually nothing sticks to them. Fats and oils bead up, and little crispy bits fall right away. They are also oven safe up to 475 degrees, so the limit is really your imagination!

Ideally. Sadly, 9" Kitchen Hearts Pizza mat came with a critical defect. See, silicone mats are almost just that: silicone. The silicone, however, encases a fiberglass mesh weave that gives the mats some tensile strength and help to hold it's shape better. But when you puncture the silicone, the fiberglass is exposed and it's time to toss the mat, both for health and safety reasons. And my round mat had exposed fiberglass all around the outside edge. Not only would that let water in and ruin the mat, but it's unsafe. One should never consume the fibers from fibergalss, and putting a sticky dough on exposed fibers a sure-fire way to do just that. So I didn't even get to try it, sadly. The large mat (a now-standard half-sheet 16.5" x 11.6" size) did not have these issues. I may contact the company about this because I'm really hoping to a new tool in my kitchen!

Madking Edison-Style Filament 60W Incandescent Bulb (6-pack)

I've been a fan of Edison-Style filament bulbs from the moment I saw them. They are so intricate, delicate, and beautiful and bring a little bit of fancy into an otherwise utilitarian object. And while pretty incandescent bulbs are now quite in vogue, it wasn't too long ago that they were quite hard to come by. I was thrilled to get to try a new set with a different design, but alas, all Edison-style bulbs are not created equal.
DSC_0730
At first, everything was perfect. Most of my light fixtures now had some version of Edison-Style lights in them. They have a standard (E26) base as well as a standard (A19) bulb shape. They run on standard 120V power and are supposed to be rated for up to 3,000 hours (more on that later). The Madking bulbs were a little brighter, but a little extra light in a room can be a good thing. Then the first bulb blew out, just a couple of days after I put it in. I chalked that up to rough handling from shipping, but a few days later, the replacement blew out as well. Then another went in a separate fixture. So unless every bulb had the bejeezus shaken out of it during shipping, there must be a defect in the materials somewhere. I'm hesitant now to put them back into fixtures, because what's the point if they only last a few days to a week? A quick check of the reviews on Amazon shows that this is a pretty common occurance, and while Madking seems to be great about shipping replacements, those seem to sometimes blow out just as fast. The last thing I want to be doing in dragging out the stepstool every few days and replace more bulbs. That's not a merry-go-round I want to ride, thanks.
DSC_0731
It's a shame these didn't last better or longer, because while they work, they're beautiful. While they are a tad brighter than I would like, they are at a nice intersection where form meets function, without either really taking precedence over the other. If they could just figure out why they burn out so fast and fix that, Madking has a real winner on their hands.

Campbell's® : New Campbell's Organic Soups #Review #CampbellsOrganic #Mo...

Topaz UNISEX 5060ABK Rose Gold and Black Face Watch

We’ve established that Hubby is a bit of a watch nut. He has one for almost every occasion, save for a nice “dress” watch. So when I got the opportunity to try out a watch from Topaz that would fill that one empty niche in his watch collection, I was thrilled. But, as the song we all know goes, “The thrill is gone”.
DSC_0660
When we first got the watch, Amazon had done their usual atrocious packaging job and simply thrown it in the box with a couple of other, larger things. Consequently, when I gave it to hubby, there was a small rattle in the case and the minute hand would “wobble” and move with the normal movement of the arm of the person wearing it. That’s no bueno. So we contacted Topaz about this and they immediately shipped us a replacement. Sadly, though now shipped alone and packaged better, the minute hand on the watch wobbled, even more than last time and would in fact move forward or back by several minutes. All righty then. There’s other issues as well. The Amazon listing says: “WATER RESISTANT to 99 feet.(30M). Withstands rain and splashes of water but not for showering or swimming” How the heck something is supposed to be “water resistant to 30m” but can’t be submerged is beyond my ability to comprehend.
The crown doesn’t screw in, so I would assume that any water in or around it will bork the entire watch. The case is all stainless steel, with a rose-gold electroplating and looks stunning, with the black face and sub-dial at 6 o’clock for the second hand, but the caseback is the pressure type instead of screw down, so replacing the battery would have to be done out of house. The leather band is plush and looks nice as well, but the spring bars that hold it on are so thin that they will bend with the slightest of pressure. Luckily this is a dress watch and shouldn’t be seeing much in the way of any action. The Amazon listing also have the case size at a petite 38mm, but my measurement is closer to 43-44mm. That’s a pretty significant size difference, and one that, to my sensibilities at least, precludes labeling it “unisex”. And while it sports “ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY: State-of-the-art quartz technology movement” (Again, direct from their listing), the minute hand moving around with just the motion of one’s arm would negate any precise timekeeping, “advanced” quartz technology be damned.
In the end this watch looks pretty in my husband’s watch case, but that’s about all it’s really good for. It’s poorly made and manufactured. One problem watch I can explain away, but two with the exact same issue? That’s a quality control problem, and one that directly affects the usability of the product. You can spend the same money (or less!) and get a decent quartz watch from Seiko, Citizen or Timex that won’t have these kinds of issues. I can’t recommend this watch, I’m sorry.

Motion Sensor Light Pro's Socket and LED Bulb Set

I try to stay up on the latest tech and innovations int he home goods department. Sometimes, I see a product that screams “Why didn’t anyone think of this before?!” and sometimes, ones that just make you scratch your head and wonder what the manufacturer was thinking. This one falls somewhere in between.
DSC_0736
I get the point of motion sensor lights, and I very much like them. I like the idea of LED lights, and the real-world savings is undeniable. Combining the two would appear to be a no-brainer, and yet the realization left much to be desired. For starters, it’s large size made it unwieldy in the one place I thought it would work the very best: The bathroom as a nightlight. Alas, our wall socket is too close to the medicine cabinet, making this an impossibility. But, for the few moments it was there, it worked just liked I imagined it would. Be careful to tune the sensitivity/range of the motion sensor, lest it be set off every time someone passes by the door. Other than that, I can’t imagine any other wall socket that isn’t at ankle height and that makes it fairly useless for me. I did like that the controls are such that you can fine tune the length of time it’s on, the distance at which it “picks up” movement, or just for “dawn to dusk”.
DSC_0735
The problems I had with it are the overall usability (I don’t know many people with wall sockets at a height that would make this useful) and the lack of a polarized plug. The LED light it self is a bright, harsh blue-ish almost fluorescent light, and I did switch that out for a soft white LED, which immediately improved the quality of the light. But the included light came on almost instantly, didn’t flicker and was plenty bright.

Iconic Pet’s Luxury Large “Orthopaedic” Pet Bed From Pet Paws.World

It's a new year, and with it usually comes new stuff. Out with old, in with the new...you all know how it goes. And the new year is full of promise and hope, as is our new stuff. But in this house we're never alone in the "new stuff" proposition, because our furry little girl gets new clothes, toys and treat, but this year we were going to spoil her with a huge new plush bed from Pet Paws.World. And, as sometimes happens, the best laid plans sometimes get torn asunder by forces beyond our control. This was one of those times.
DSC_0629
To start, the Amazon image showed a huge, plush, truly luxury pet bed that we thought our dog would just get lost in and be in love with. It stated it was "Orthopaedic" and had a durable core and less odors. With it's large size (35" x 32" x 11") and promised features it seemed our dog hit the jackpot. And then, after some delays in shipping, it arrived and things started to unravel.

Keep in mind as you look at this comically overstuffed box that the tiles I snapped these pics on are 12" x 12", and the box barely occupied two across longwise, two wide, and less than one thick. For a bed sized 35" x 32" x 11". Ridiculous. And it only got worse as I "unstuffed" this poor thing from it's miniature cardboard sarcophagus. All the polyester fiberfill had been smashed flatter than a pancake for so long, we kept waiting for it fluff back up, but alas, it never did. So instead of the large, plush, overstuffed bed that practically drowned the large grinning black Labrador Retriever in the picture with luxury:

We got this:

A smooshed bed and a sad, medium sized mutt. In fact, we found it was so flat and woefully understuffed we sacrificed an old comforter from our guest room, and folded it over a few times to add some padding underneath, because there was so little fiberfill in the "orthopaedic" center cushion that she was practically on the hard floor underneath anyways. When we contacted Blair at Pet Paws.World about this, he was shocked and dismayed that this over $65 dog bed has effectively been ruined by the shipping. He promised to touch bases with the shipping company about this as he found it unacceptable. We still had the issue of reviewing this product as received, and it missed the mark, badly. There's nothing remotely "orthopaedic" about it, there's no "core" that keeps the center cushion from being smashed flat at all, and while I don't doubt it's safe for the washing machine, the tag seems to have been intended for something far more substantial:
DSC_0632
In the end, for the price ($65.05 plus $7.99 shipping, no Prime available) I expected more. I quick cursory glace around a local big box pet retailer unearthed many, many beds that were far more substantial and for much less money. When you go over the $55 price point, you start getting into memory and gel foams with removable covers and stain-resistant treatments, none of which are in or on this bed. We routinely buy the overstuffed Kirkland beds from Costco at under $30. They last for years and years, have a zipper to remove or replace the padding, and have the legendary Costco warranty. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. I hope Pet Paws.World looks into this, because I know if I'd bought this bed at this price and got what I did, I'd be demanding a refund with a quickness. It's nothing like it's pictured or described, and for what it is it's badly overpriced.

I liked that it was large, and that it's machine washable, and the little raised rubberized bumps on the bottom are inspired, because our dog loves to scoot he beds all over the place, and this at least discourages that. That's about the only positives from this bed.
